Here in Hamilton I can see the Telecom XT network, so I'm guessing they're using the 2100 network here.

Just thinking about Samsung's timing for sending out the upgrade to Android 2.2/FroYo: there are many variants of the Galaxy S now being announced by US carriers. This is a quote from CNet's Crave site today:

"Over the past few days, we've learned the identities of a couple of Samsung Galaxy S phones headed for the U.S., including the Samsung Captivate for AT&T and the Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile".

That means there are going to be a lot of "Galaxy S's" out there worldwide, which should mean more incentive or pressure on Samsung to roll it out sooner rather than later.

They also announced releases for Sprint, Verizon and US Cellular today. And some of the press releases along with those phone releases were promising 2.2 upgrades 'soon' ie in the next month or two (FWIW)

Yeah, I'm hoping the same thing, but I'm not holding my breath. I think it's a fairly new phenomenon that phones are radically upgraded for long periods after manufacture date, I'm mean we don't see that from Nokia, and we never saw it with feature phones. I guess Apple really set the benchmark of releasing a new phone and upgraded operating system every year, even for previous generation phones.

Not sure that's entirely fair on Nokia - I had a Nokia 5800 XM for 15 months and about a month (six weeks?) ago Nokia sent out an upgrade that made radical changes to the kinetic scrolling and the music player got a great freshenup plus other bits and pieces.

My partner has an N97 an it got a similar upgrade, but I would more call it tinkering than say an Android 2.1 to 2.2 upgrade.

Either way I'm glad to be on Android than Symbian. Goodbye Ovi Store, hello Android marketplace!

For the first time I just ripped a couple of tracks from a Diana Krall DVD, using AimerSoft DVD Ripper at 800 x480, just see what it looked like and how it ran. It actually looked fantastic - but - once a track had started, a white padlock icon appeared in the top RH corner of the screen and I had no way of controlling the video until the track ended, apart from adjusting the volume. Had no choice other than to watch it right through.

Anyone know what this is all about - am I missing something?

What video/audio codecs did you use to rip, and into what container format?

A source at Telecom told me, off the record, that the Galaxy S is in testing for NZ release, possibly by August. That was second hand info that came from a Samsung rep, and it wasn't clear to me whether they were talking about Telecom or Vodafone, but my source seems to believe that it will be sold by Telecom. Also, the terminology they used makes this a bit ambiguous, but they said that it would be "upgradable by users". What that means exactly, I'm not sure, but I liked the sound of that.

Sounds good for local support. Wonder if they will honour the 2 year uk warranty? By the way, typing this with Swype on my new Galaxy S :-)

That would match up with the AT&T Captivate dates, which is a Galaxy S with a few changes,
Looks like a really really good launch in the US for Samsung, so far:

Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint - 4G Bands on Galaxy S with changes, slide out keyboard, flash

Samsung Captivate on AT&T - a bit squarer, 16gb storage, usual features

Samsung Fascinate on Verizon - looks almost the same, looks to be missing front cam though?

Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile - extra button by the looks, not much else has changed, possible LED flash?

They are probably  talking about it being upgradable to froyo.  There were rumours swirling around a while back that the galaxies that were shipped without froyo wouldnt be able to upgrade to it even when new galaxies were shipped with froyo installed..

they were just rumours, and false.

2.2 apparently in Q3 and another US carrier confirmed

Though most of the phones' details were released earlier, Shin and Khan shared some additional thoughts on the Galaxy S series:
Shin believes the Galaxy S will raise the bar in the smartphone market in three key areas: screen, speed, and content.
Cellular South will also get an Galaxy S phone as well in Fall 2010.
Khan: Galaxy S is the most significant achievement in the smartphone market for Samsung in the U.S.
Samsung's Super AMOLED screen is 2500x faster than other display technologies to deliver an HD-like experience.
Entire Galaxy S portfolio will be updated to Android 2.2 Q3 2010.

Just wish mine would arrive :( found an email from 2 days ago in my spam from Clove asking to confirm my details...

I have mine now, and I love it. Had a bit of an issue with getting the mobile internet set up on 2degrees (Yes I know its only 2G until perhaps next month, but still a million times an improvement on my Motorola RAZR!) - just had to change the APN to "internet".....and then wait about 20 minutes for some unknown reason.

To follow up on the other conversation, I got stung for GST - $103. Still, saves me $400 compared to pricespy (Expansys has it for $900 plus GST)

The only disappointment so far is that the Samsung apps and add-ons for this phone are useless! But finding the Android market a lot of fun :-0
