FYI a new rom has been created that sorts out the battery drain issue:

Download here

tinyurl.com/67wpzzm

Don't rename just select it as the single package and upgrade through odin, I have just done the upgrade so will let you know over the weekend how the battery is going.

Edit: credit to XDA-developers for this

Oh man having just done the upgrade and reinstalling all my apps, I don't think I could bear doing a hard reset again!  I'm currently using CPU tuner which supposedly sets the governor to ondemand.  If they fix the compass issue I might consider upgrading again...

Is that Froyo still?
I'm on the US version too and left it on overnight, sometime overnight it shut down....so less than 10 hours, but I guess I'm still conditioning the battery and being used to 1500mAH batteries in my Spica and Galaxy S might be comparing apples to oranges with the 1200mAH in the 5503

Will try the new room when I get home I think :)

Yeah definitely will :) just gonna let the battery drain, think I need to condition it a bit, maybe let it drain completely then charge complete over the next week, then will report back on the battery.  Can't wait to see your results on the new rom though

THANK YOU.

I recently bought the 5500 and experienced the same problems; phone going into a coma at random times throughout the day, Wifi not connecting. I found this thread, followed the instructions and used the updated ROM above (tinyurl.com/67wpzzm), now the phone works as it should have from the start. I'm in Canada by the way on Virgin Mobile.

If I could add one thing, before doing anything go to the Market and download APN Backup & Restore, then back up your APN info to your sim card. After updating the phone and doing a factory reset, go find and download the same app again and restore your APN info. Takes seconds and works perfectly.

The phone seems more responsive with 2.2, maybe it's just my imagination though. Love the colourful menus, but most of all no more taking the battery out to reset it, I was worried I was going to end up breaking the back of the case from doing it so much!

Again, thanks. For anyone on the fence wondering if this is worth it, it totally is. $200 for a Froyo phone, no contract, full functionality, can't be beat.

I decided I'd give this a crack today. Yesterday I installed an official Samsung 2.1 update and the phone kept restarting after it used wifi for a little. So I thought what the hell, I've already done a factory reset and lost my settings.

Worked a treat...apart from not having the full keyboard anymore!?!?!?! And only having "Silent" as a phone ringtone option. Although when calls come through it rings. It's like it's missing a few things from the interface.

Anyone else had that problem?

I can't stand that 3x4 keyboard so will I have to download a free 3rd party one?

2.2 certainly fixes a heap of issues the phone had.

When Samsumg do the official 2.2 release, can it "overwrite" this one? i.e. setting the model back to the proper one, installing the right keyboards etc?

I can live with it as it is, but will certainly "update" to the official release when it comes out to fix the problems.

The keyboard is still there - click and hold on an input panel (eg google search) and it will come up with input method select swype and you've got your keyboard back.

When the official one is released we'll need to get a copy of it to upload via odin and after that it should update via kies or a hacked kies can trick the phone into thinking you've got the original rom on it - ether way it won't be a biggie.

ah cool thanks. I mustn't of scrolled up enough. Was the predictive suggestions part of the Samsung version?

Any ideas regarding the ringtone issues? I only have Silent for the call ringtone and Silent and Facebook Pop for notifications.

Looks like something interesting was going on with the UI. I since installed a few of my old apps (since the change in model name makes google think it's a different phone) that provide notifications and I now have the full list of tones in the Sound settings. Kinda weird but, meh, works now.

Just need multi-touch now Wink

You need to go to Settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile networks, Access Point Names,

Then press the menu button on the phone and it has a shortcut for Add APN

I tried the Asia firmware and the touchscreen doesn't work. I now have the Europe running on my phone.

One problem I have is that it wont allow landscape wallpapers, only portrait. The gallery wallpaper crop in Android 2.1 was landscape, but it's portrait in 2.2, so the wallpaper doesn't move when you slide left or right. :(

Yep it's been said many times that the asian firmware is only for the 5508 which has a resistive screen the 5503 is the same as the 5500 which you can use the USA or Europe firmwares.

Mine doesn't have any issues scrolling through the wall paper when sliding left or right but mine is on the USA batfix version of 2.2.
