Great Thread!

I'm looking to pick up a SGS2 in the next few days. I fell in lust with it after a couple of minutes on a friends and figured it's a good time to ditch my iPhone 4 before the 5's released and the 4's 2nd hand price takes a hit.

Quick question... is there any reason I shouldn't get a parallel imported one?  Expert infotech have them in stock for $790, which is a pretty decent saving over DSE or Vodafone.  Are there any downsides that you know about?

Cheers

Hi,

Telecom NZ is out with a new offer where you get the phone for free if you sign up for a 24 month $100 plan.
Not sure if this has been mentioned in here before. Definetaly a good offer if you are going to use the phone a lot. Think the smart plan gives 300 minutes talking, 300 texts and 2GB of Data...

I think the only real problems with parallel imports is the after sales service/repairs if you have a fault. You can face significant delays while waiting for repairs.

Some drop-shippers (companies who ship the phone direct from an overseas warehouse) have contracts with local phone repair places. This at least gives you a local place for phone repairs, so long as they're able to fix the problem.

Of course, this doesn't help if the phone needs replacing because it's too damaged to repair. That still requires the phone to be sent internationally, which could means weeks to get a turn-around.

I purchased my previous phone (HTC Desire) in the UK. It developed a fault where it started overheating when doing voice navigation and would switch off. I had to send it back to the UK which cost around $60 NZ. However, the turn around in getting it repaired and returned was fantastic - I think it was something like 10 days that I was without a phone.

HTC in the UK only had it for a single day before fixing it and sending it back to me. Pretty good turn around!

Mine was bought from parrallel importer but from shop so is under CGA hence I'm not bothered about warranty as that is there issue. I am on a telecom open plan because I didn't want to have a phone for 2 years given the changes and also I can change telco's whenever I want. The deals they offer are nothing more than HP so if you have the readies you are free to do whatever you want.
On my open term its $60 with 1gb which is all I need a month with 300 txt and 100 minutes but the current deal is good if you intend keeping phone for 2 years

I'm paying $59 a month on 2degrees for 210 minutes + 100 bonus minutes, 2500 texts and 150 mb +1 gb bonus data (for 12 months).

It's pay monthly so not locked into a 12, 18 or 24 month term, which is great.

Interesting to see what the offerings will be in 12 months for a gig of data.

I am proud to say I have just joined the SGS II owners club and am rightly proud of my purchase.  I purchased it while I was over in Sydney from a place called MobileCiti http://www.mobileciti.com.au/ and it cost me $685 Australian, and that included a 16gb micro sd card and screen protector (after a bit of wrangling lol). Of course I also claimed my GST back on that at Sydney airport so it ended up costing me cheaper :-). It even comes with a 24 month warranty as it is an Australian/NZ model.
Loving the phone as its a BIG step up from my trusty old SE W995 (which is still working). My wife is looking at my SGS II with envious eyes as she has the Ideos U8150...lol

So many guides about updating to 2.3.4 say "Install Supercore using ODIN" but I have been unable to find any detailed instructions of how to do this. Any ideas?

I have looked through Brendan's guide and canot see anything relevant...

Clove have them http://www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-i9100-extended-battery but stock not due till November so might be tricky to find semi locally since we dont seem to get Samsung accessories released locally. Maybe its time to organise a complaint campaign to Samsung NZ?
