Lambchop: also the browser .... kinda floaty,  and not loving the text reflow ... does not readjust on pinch to zoom ..and ..can't set the browser as far as i can see to not view sites in mobile view ?

I really like the browser, besides the reflow text problem at any rate. To change the user agent type about:useragent into the address bar, hit enter, it will come up with a list of alternatives. One of them is for desktop, or you can click iPhone and see how websites look when they've been optimised for the other half :)

Whatever you choose will reset between sessions (you can exit by hitting home and leaving the browser session active though).

Just use Odin... Painless and hassle free. The link I posted earlier gives detailed instructions, but it really is simple.

The one in the link was the same version as what I already had I believe. XXDH.

Well I saw numbers on the page and entered *2767*3855# and it performed a full reset.
Whoops. But now it is identified on Kies, so that's a start - and I synced my phone with Google only a few hours ago.

Hope this works out :D Kies is downloading update now.

edenLOL: When I plug my phone in Kies says "Unable to connect to GT-I9100. Failed to retrieve device information."

I'm not running any apps, and on the phone screen it says "Connected Press the home key to quit Samsung Kies"

Try plugging it into a different USB port on your PC, or at least removing it from the current port and plugging it back in. If your computer is more than about 3 or 4 years old, try plugging into one of the ports on the back of the motherboard.

Hopefully it's not a problem with the phone!

Tried that. It has only worked since I mistakenly did a factory reset, and then Kies recognised it.

I was downloading the Firmware update, and it got to 49% and failed - leaving my phone stuck in download mode. I removed the battery (as per instructions from Kies) and now it has started back up.

But I still can't update the Firmware >_>

I hate to say it, but iTunes was easier! Lol

I'm not sure you read the post properly. It gives links to all versions of the firmware, the KE2 link is there, and after repeated attempts with Kies I found it really easy. Have another read and try it.

My apologies I confused it with another link. I am downloading the latest one in that thread now. Thanks :)

I should have linked back to that post, but I was using my phone at the time and the mobile version doesn't let you quote (as far as I've noticed so far anyway!).

I persevered for ages with Kies and was going mad trying to get it working properly. I can see why it has such a bad name. Odin just made it easy.

Kies is as fussy as all get out. Rightly castigated by all I'd say. Rumour has it that it's being replaced by an OTA version in the future but who knows. Rumours are often just wishful thinking.

To the point - some things Kies doesn't like:

External SD cards bigger than a certain size. What that size is nobody will agree on but ejecting it prior to using Kies seems prudent.

Launchers other than TouchWhiz - switch back to TW prior to attempting to use Kies, and once you're finished (or are utterly slacked off and have given up), switch back to your preferred launcher again.

Put your phone's USB in Kies mode prior to connecting to the PC rather than using the "ask" option.

None of the above juju is guaranteed to ensure your successful connection. In fact, each time I've attempted to update through Kies, I've had to reinstall the drivers as well. Why? WTFK.

If by some incredible fluke this info helps even remotely, then buy a Lotto ticket straight away because your lucky star will be shining on you. On the other hand, should the foregoing be of no help whatsoever, then I shan't fall down in amazement.

Cheers,
R2D2

PS: Use Odin. It's so much easier. :-)

So i'm all updated and rooted as per the xda guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

I did not lose any configuration except my LCD Density was back to stock and just required another reboot to sort out.

I even reflashed the original kernel after rooting to remove the garish yellow triangle you get when using the insecure kernel... not that it makes any difference I suppose.

I won't know what might have been changed/fixed for me but seeing as I had very little/no issues with the shipped rom I can't imagine i'll be disappointed. This is by far and away the best phone i've ever owned, or ever used. Hands down. Just wish kies wasn't so balls *shrug*

I've also just tried out the BBC iPlayer and Netflix apps using some VPN's I use on my HTPC. Whilst my VPN's aren't the fastest, they're certainly good enough to get a feel for the apps... and they make me want better VPN's :(

Unfortunately the android Netflix app doesn't let me disconnect from the VPN and continue to stream at full speed like I do for the Media Center application. BBC has never let me do that but thankfully my VPN to the UK is fast enough to take it.

Now all I need is a way to shortcut to the VPN settings page for quick connections/disconnections, faster VPN's and a bit of luck and i'll be even happier.

ahh cool. cheers man.

yeh Kies .... i was thinking before that "right ..lets just do everything by the book for the first few weeks and let the other beta test for me"  lol ..but Kies ...what a POS .... keeps loosing connection to my phone, on both my win7 and xp computers.  and system updates ..god after a few failed attempts it got part way through downloading and crashed right in the middle of it. i almost shat myself think brick city here i come.

so yeh just followed the upgrade via odin guide at xda and boom  KE2.

then thought ..hell  that was easy, might as well root it ..  supercurio has a kernal that does it all for you.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060673

then flashed back to stock kernal.

man ...soooo much easier than what it took to root my desire first time back in the day, gold cards etc ... bodes well for the future..

mind you there's not a lot i want to mod anyways at this stage.
