K1000716: From memory odin is a samsung in-house development tool while kies is their consumer tool. Not sure what happened with your flash but I'd try downloading the files again and re flash it.

I'll try it. In the mean time, can anyone tell me how to get into recovery mode?

Presuming it's like the SGSI.  Press and hold the Volume UP button, with the home button and the power button.  When the boot up screen appears release all buttons.

And then you can use ADB Shell as well but that's a whole bunch of other technology and I'm not the right person to pretend I know how that works.

Cool that worked, now when Kies tries to do the firmware rollback it gets to 90% and says Unzip Error. Lol this is going so wrong for me haha D:

I really appreciate all the help I am getting though!!!

It didn't work. After flashing with Odin the device info stays the same as stock released on 26 April. :S

Finally! It worked. Flashed it for the fifth time with the KE2 firmware lol.

It appears that after entering recovery mode, then just hitting reboot did something... And now my phone is running KE2 :)

Thanks so much for all of your help!

Glad you got it sorted in the end, this sort of thing is very frustrating.
A bit of a random fault too, did you try googling the problem? I'd love to know if anyone else has had the same thing happen as it seemed so simple and foolproof. I fought with kies for a day and a half, about a dozen attempts, before going with odin and definitely won't be going back.

I seem to be one of the few who had no issues upgrading via Kies, it did it first time fine.

I did Google the problem, but couldnt really find anything the same. it might have been the factory reset mixed with the failed kies update that may have just stuffed something up.

now ill get to see if the latest firmware fixes my battery issues :-).

Really appreciate the help!

dauckland: This is a very strange thing to say but I'm sort of glad I'm not the only person experiencing nightmare scenarios with Kies. I got stuck in firmware update mode on the phone.
I tried countless times, including several factory resets, and no joy.

I am reluctant to go the Odin way.
Is any of you guys, who managed to successfully get the firmware loaded through Kies, willing to help out?

Thanks,
Damian

I updated through Kies on Sunday.  PC - windows 7 Ultimate. Powered off phone then back on, plugged into USB port, Kies opened, advised I had an update.  Selected OK to proceed  35 minutes or so later all done.
Note: accepted option to back up contacts, but nothing else.

Kies was latest version on samsung.com that I downloaded and installed on Sat (night before).

I must admit it is not the nicest of interfaces for doing things, but seeing issues people can hae also using ODIN makes me nervous.  I don't see any need to root or whatever my phone at this stage.  It works, and works well.

Suggest you
a)  Reboot PC
b) uninstall kies
c) Download and install latest version
d) Power off and on your phone
e) plug it into a USB port...

cheers

If you're going to Google a problem you're having with an Android phone you're probably best of including this in your search string:
site:XDA-developers.com or site:geekzone.co.nz

Big improvement since updating the firmware to KE2. Android OS was using 20-40% of my battery each day on stock firmware. Now Android OS is using 5%, with display using 54% at 1h 26m on-time over 9h 15m.

After the 9hrs my battery is at 28%, but I have been playing around with it and on skype half the time.

Much better experience!

That's good news edenLOL. I've been having considerable battery drain in the last few days as well, with Android OS hovering 30-40%. I'm hoping the firmware upgrade helps, otherwise I'll factory reset and try installing my apps one at a time to see if one in particular is causing the drain on my battery.

Thanks for the tips.
My biggest issue is that I do not have a windows pc. The first update I tried to do was a win7 via parallels, and it went wrong. Since then that copy of Kies is saying the battery is to low to do the update, even when it's full.
I tried on winXP on parallels, but same results.
The Kies status indicates that as soon as the firmware is being prepared the connection is lost.

I did get a pal to attempt it on a standard win7 laptop, but downloads stalled several times and then the usual connection lost.

I will pop the win7 again this time through bootcamp and see what happens.

Wish me luck.

PS. I noticed that the DRM something process seems to eat up quite a bit of battery. So playing music triggers a large drop in juice and spike in Android OS percentage. Also today, after 1d 4h of use on 3g with data turned on, 33% of battery left, I get cell standby with 100% of time without signal - total pile of the proverbial.
