Darkyrom have released the OTA app, available in market. Basically its an app that allows you to flash, install apps, bacup/restore user data and also lets you know when updates arrive as in kernals roms etc (darky only)

It is also like a rom kitchen where you choose themes etc so handy little app. Works for SGS1 as well

Wade: I'm on Checkrom RevoHD rom (KK5 2.3.6) with Siyah Dark Knight 2.3 kernel running 100mhz~1.2gHz on smartassV2 governor, usual Samsung bloatware (I like social hub and a couple of the widgets :P)

Just run some Benchmarks, Results.....

Vellamo: 1043, 977, 980

Quadrant: 4177, 4221,4177

Battery life: screen off <2%/Hr, screen on 4~6%/Hr

This rom is the smoothest, most fluid rom i have ever experienced on my SGS2, ithoroughly recommend trying it out, it will be the last rom you use until ICS i am sure. The ICS theme included in the package is pleasant on the eye too

I'm running that combination now as well, no idea what this smartassv2 thing is though?

i've managed to turn on a feature where a lady reads out my notifications, i've looked for it in the applications list but it's not there and it remains after power cycle, does anyone know how to turn this off (telecom ROM)?

Sounds like a voice option. Check your settings> voice input and out>text to speech. See if you can turn it off there.

jeffnz: Darkyrom have released the OTA app..

droan: Vellamo for benchmarking?

Cheers I will try both of these for my tests and see how it goes.

I find smartassV2 the pick of the bunch, it gives me the a near as dammit experience to stock governor and keep the clockspeed low off demand.

My ph consumes 5%/hr screen on bright surfing hte interwebs, screen off with two active push email accts running and the usual updating background processes etc i get 2% during the day, no email overnight and it drops to 1~1.5%/hr

Agree that SmartassV2 is pretty darn good, but I think two of the recent govs, Lulzactive & Lionheart now surpass it. . . . .Very subjective though, as it depends entirely on how you use your phone.

So so far I can concur that Checkrom v4 HD is the best based on vallemo benchmarking.

I tried

Stock 2.3.4: 950

Dlev 3.1: 946

Cyanogen 7.1: 963

Checkrom v4: 1201

^^ All hail CM7!

What kind of battery life do you get mate? I only got my SGS2 a couple of days ago and I'm trying out CM with the stock kernel.

Secondly, what modem does everyone here recommend? Currently on KE7 as its what was on the phone when I got it.

Thirdly, Why the hell does my youtube app play wrong videos? Like, I'll click on a video and it'll just play some chinese news clip. Any ideas?

Cheers.

It appears to be a sort-of-known issue. See this thread for details: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=92924

We're having the same issue on all three Android devices in our house. I've just added my two cents to the Youtube thread/ticket you raised Kevin.

CM7 still have some installation issues with certain SG2 units. Mine one foe example is one of them.

It is however the fastest rom to use if you can get it going!

Checkrom however got some really cool add ons that blown my mind i.e. adding Sony's Bravia's BE engine (colour enrichment)  it just great! The ease of use of adding custom apps, theme, kernal, modems using kitchen pro is by far the best.

Anyway, happy with checkrom until the Icecream starts zooming out :)

If you have trouble with CM7, Checkrom is a damn fine replacement.

All still only opinion as I doubt many would have tried all roms available currently nor measured battery life v speed as there is no doubt a trade off.

Some Roms are fashionable like the Iphone so its a must have. Really it gets down to what you want it to do even then most want speed and battery life, go figure, and all the apps running as well.

I run Darky Rom have done for a while as i like its simplicity although they now have the OTA app which is like a Rom kitchen except it flashes most other roms, .tar, .zip so handy as app if you like to flashh madly to keep up with Jones's.
