welliegeek: OK total noob here.

Should I be able up upgrade my VF SGII to ICS using Kies yet? I'd rather not go the Odin route but it seems that there is an official ROM out..... When I try in Kies I get "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies"

Cheers

PS: Kies - what a POS!

That message can occur when you have a mismatched CSC/firmware.

What details do you get when you enter *#1234# in the dialler?

KevinL

I get:

PDA: I9100XWKE7
PHONE: I9100XXKE4
CSC: I9100VNZKE2
Build Info: Wed May 18 16:08:22 KST 2011

It should be the standard VF build as after loading different firmware on phones in the past and jailbreaking my previous iPhone I just wanted to stay standard this time around :)

That seems to be fine - are you using a Mac by chance?  Kies doesn't support firmware upgrades on the OSX platform.  Otherwise, I'd look at uninstalling KIES, removing the drivers, and reinstalling... or you could just go down the Odin route but flash the official firmware.

KevinL  - I AM using a Mac.  Nice to see it comes up with a useful message..... :)

Thanks for the pointer - I'll see if I can find a windows machine somewhere (none of the 4 in my house are....)

Well, after two hours of trying to upgrade using a windows VM I managed to find a 5 year old laptop in the cupboard and to worked just fine (painfully slow, but fine ;))

Thanks for the tips.

Apparently it actually does, but was never implemented. Discussion on XDA early last year revealed that one of the chips had the feature, but that there was no software support for it at all.

well I think I have a new battery record. Using the 2000mah, I just got 2d23H20M with 6% left. I did make 2 hours of calls in that time, text messaging, prob 30 minutes of web browsing, 10 minutes of zombie lane...

I just read that the s2 is inferior to many inc s1 in terms of headphone audio quality and that a certain voodoo kernel with some tweaking will make it superior ... Anyone explain?

Updated via Keis to ICS... working well TBH. Battery life is improved. The devices runs alot smoother but I feel the touch screen isn't so sensitive.

Pleased all round.

In a nutshell the Wolfson chip used in the S1 and S3 gives excellent quality sound, particularly with the tweaks made by Supercurio's Voodoo Sound. The S2 uses a cheaper (supposedly) and lower quality Yamaha chip which leaves little to no room for improvement.
There are voodoo tweaks for colour, but nothing for sound on the S2.

Is anyone else finding contacts and phone a bit slow to open with ICS? It's ok once it's in memory but the first time it takes 3 or 4 seconds. I'm using Lite'ning ROM 2.7 with Siyah 3.1.2. Have wiped everything etc but still the same.

Can't say I've noticed, but you'll probably find that sort of thing will improve incrementally as the newer versions of ICS roll out.
