NZtechfreak: The only reason to have Kies installed is so you have the neccessary files to flash stuff to your phone with Odin. I'm currently upgrading Kies so I can Root my SGSII.

I wondered how long it would take before the phone was rooted :)

Broph: I think I read somewhere that Samsung are going to release a couple of different versions? One with Super AMOLED Plus, another with just Super AMOLED due to supply shortage... and the one with Super AMOLED will have 1GB Internal Storage instead of 8GB... is this correct? Does this phone have NFC?

Oh, and also, does it have any stupid carrier pre-installed stuff when bought off Clove? My friend bought Incredible S from www.eking.co.nz and when it arrived it had heaps of asian pre-installed stuff with it.... Clove the same?

Not really, only application you can't use is BBC iPlayer,  But I actually think it's a good app, so I'm trying to configure it with VPN to get it working

Also, GPS compared to the older Galaxy S = phenomenal.  Did a track today for 13km, it even tracked my lane changes down the motorway! And showed when I overtook cars/trucks.  Also showed that I never broke the speedlimit....whoops.  Me and my granny driving/peak hour traffic

Anyone know how to get a link for tracks data?  I'd like to post the map here if possible

Once I realised that I needed Kies to install drivers to get root I was able to tolerate it for the extra 30min it took me to get it all sorted out and rooted. Done, and done.

Which root method did you use?

This one. One small step missed is that once you boot the phone into download mode you need to press the 'volume up' button to enter into a mode that the PC will see. Then follow the guide as per described.

I've since tried LCD Density changer which was nice until it stopped my wifi from connecting after a reboot. Reverting the value to default made wifi work again... a very odd problem I know. I've asked on the LCD Density thread on xda to see if anyone there will know how to fix it.

Chainfire has kindly provided a kernel to allow Root, after that you just use superoneclick and you're good to go...

Forgot to let everyone know - here is where you can the USB OTG cables

Read speeds are fast enough to watch 1080p content, just loaded a few movie trailers onto a card - spectacular! The extra sharpness here compared to the SGSI really shows itself when watching video!

Sidenote on microSD Class ratings:

My 32GB Class 2 Sandisk card benchmarks with write speeds of ~5.5MB/s - this is more than enough for any in-phone use-case scenario. The most demanding thing you can currently do on a cellphone, in terms of SD card read/write demands, is encoding or decoding 1080p video - my Class 2 card is sufficient to do this. I tested it out today and videos recorded to the internal SD look no different than those written to the external SD. This doesn't surprise me, since 1080p video is recording at ~2-3MB/s, in other words well within what a Class 2 Sandisk card is capable of (other manufacturers tend to exceed minimum spec less than Sandisk does). Watching 1080p from the external card is no problem whatsoever either.

The only advantage a higher Class card confers is in the speeds you get writing to the card from the PC, and probably even then only in a card reader. After the initial load of a new card, which for most people is loading their music collection, higher Class cards have really very little advantage over lower Class cards. If you regularly write a lot of data to your external card, then a higher Class card may still benefit you enough to make the additional cost worth it. For most I doubt this is the case.

Please lets stop perpetuating bad information about lower Class cards, OK?

I see Samsung have released the SGS 2 source code so that can only be a good thing.

Yep, its all coming together nicely. Should have some good stuff from the devs very soon! Will be nice to do more with Root than restore my apps and add the CRT effect.

BTW, did an endomondo track of my commute to work this morning - very accurate even in the overcast conditions today. Was using Navigation at the same time, tracking was perfect, even in quite a densely packed area of windy streets that always threw my SGSI for a loop.

Thats 2 good reports of GPS tracking now. I ran to work with CardioTrainer on and I wasnt that impressed with it. As far as it was concerned I was running over peoples rooves, and crossing the road in a drunken fashion (thats usually Friday nights).

Might be the location of the GPS antenna as I had it on one of those armbands, so will try again with the phone in the car.

I used mine for navigation from central London to Linconshire and back last weekend and it worked great, much better than my sgs1.

Ouch that doesn't sound too good.  Will be interested to hear if yours tracks ok in a car and also if the others that worked ok in a car work fine in the hand or arm :)
