joker97: Thanks... The custom kernels seem to be all about speed...do the governors under clock to 200 mhz while at rest and deep sleep while not used? That's the general idea. The kernels try to stay in the lowest power state they can get away with, while still remaining responsive when you need it. Given the low battery usage I've seen with SpeedMod, I'd say that whatever the kernel is doing, it's working well. (fingers crossed .. here goes) You're correct about the baseband. It's in charge of the 3G and WiFi chipsets, rather than the kernel. There have been reports that the XXKG3 and newer basebands have improved reception. You could try to get just the new baseband module and flash that by itself, but I don't know if it'll work as well (or at all) with 2.3.3 firmwares. everybodylovesfebs: Okay firstly I know you can use Titanium backup and restore apps +data. But is there a less tediuous and faster way to restore all apps to your phone after doing a full wipe ROM? Any tips/tricks/best practises? Ta. Pay for the paid version of titanium, it does that. Don't know of any others.

I'd suggest looking at the KG6 kernel from this post, or even Ninphetamine or SpeedMod. All of them are rooted kernels with CWM. Ninphetamine and SpeedMod are probably slightly better choices than CF-Root. CF-Root is a stock binary kernel with some tweaks applied, whereas the others are built from source code. You can apply a greater range of tweaks to the source code, which means you can get better performance and battery life out of the phone. ok tried all the 3 kernels above and none of them work! (fingers crossed .. here goes) You need to update your MODEM ('phone' entry in Odin) to a newer version. They seem to get better reception. Kernel has zero to do with the reception. That's all down to the modem firmware. But it'd be smart to update to a newer rom while your at it. Read my FAQ (below), section under custom rom's. Just make sure it's based on one of the newer samsung releases - kg3 or above.

FAQ UPDATE Just to let everyone know that I have done some more work on our FAQ, added some stuff about apps and some other tidying up etc. Thanks to all those who have helped so far! Would appreciate people adding in a few apps of their own in the relevant section, and it'd be good if you can keep the same layout as I have lol. FAQ link below.

has anyone flshed the new darky rom KG6 yet? or even the old KG3? is it good? ive read a fair bit about KG6 and it seems to improve reception but kill battery faster, seems like a catch 22, anybody finding this? damn good FAQ by the way, i did not even know about efs until i read it, updated just in case.

Well, my SGS II has arrived at my workplace - just need to go to work and pick it up :-) I suspect I'll be into work a little earlier today! Quick question - do I need to do a full charge or 'condition' the battery before use? When I got my HTC Desire, I charged it to 100% before I even switched it on. Longest three hours of my life. Does it really make much difference? TIA @Brendan - once I've had a play and I've reinstalled some of my favourite apps, I'll add to the FAQ.

My phone came from Unlocked Mobiles in the UK, in a sealed box, and the battery was fully charged. Hopefully you'll find the same. But even with my SGSI I was using it as it charged. I don't believe there's anything to gain my fully charging it before using. I read somewhere that fully charging before use was for old type of batteries and the ones lately do not need it. If the incentive is calibration I'm sure you can do it any time..

charging them fully from new isn't so important now, but constantly letting it drop to zero and keeping it plugged in all the time will shorten the life, lots of little charges don't matter, but every now and then run battery calibration off the market. update on Darkysrom KG6 running a few hours, its nice, but battery is draining quite quickly.
