blakamin: You will still have to flash a PG58IMG.zip because it's the latest firmware and ICS will just boot-loop without it, but you can pick any of them.

That was the confusing part. Presumably I don't have to do that if I flash a custom ROM like Insert Coin?

It's just I have seen many guides about custom ROMS and none mention the PG58IMG.ZIP file needing to be flashed.

PG58IMG.zip is the lastest firmware for ICS. You have to flash the lastest firmware before flashing any ICS ROMs.

OK I get that but it does reinforce the point about Android fragmentation. Why one has to flash new firmware for ICS is something I don't understand. I have and have access to a number of GED devices like the Nexus S, Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Nexus. The first two devices had ICS pushed over the air with no drama. The GN had ICS out of the box and I am patiently waiting for 4.04. But in none of the situations did it require flashing new firmware.

I also upgraded a Galaxy S2 to ICS recently and was able to do that with Odin - no firmware flashing required and not even root access. But I was using stock ROMS. I suspect if I had wanted a custom ROM it might have been harder.

Back to the Sensation, I presume since I have taken a CWM recover, if the upgrade turns to custard I can always boot into recovery and restore the original ROM?

If it was a stock ROM, it would be taken care of by the RUU... If it was pushed OTA, you'd never know that you were updating the firmware... It's all a part of the update process. These have nothing to do with "fragmentation" of android.
This is all about how each handset maker runs a different bootloader for their hardware.

Yup, but the chances of it turning to custard are the same as flashing any ROM.. You'd have to stuff up pretty bad!
The first time I did ICS, I didn't update the firmware, ended in a boot-loop.
Flashed back to 2.3.4 until I learnt more, and I now happily run InsertCoin ICS... and my phone is a billion times better than 2.3.4

OK I flashed a ICS ROM based on the following instructions.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21989107

It went without a hitch and now the phone is running 4.03 with HTC Sense. I did all the backups (SMS, etc) but somewhat surprised that the flash retained all the existing apps and settings even though I did wipe the cache as 4EXT recommended.

It looked more like an OTA ICS update which I have seen on the Xoom and the Nexus S except now the phone is rooted nas S-OFF and SuperCID 11111111.

Looks good so far.

Anyone have any idea when Telecom might push out an ICS update? I know some S2 owners who got it almost 3 weeks ago and am feeling jealous;-] looks so slick. I'd love to root it, but I hear about the risks of getting bricked.

Just do your research and follow instructions and you will have a phone running ICS in no time (not bricked :) ). And it is well worth it, my phone now runs super quick and smooth.

Hi, I finally tried getting s-off. I tried two methods. First one was through revolutionary.io but everytime I tried opening the revolutionary.exe file it would just open then close instantly.
Then I tried the official way from HTC at htcdev.com, but when I got to I step 9 where you enter the fastboot oem command to get the identifier token it keeps saying the command is invalid.
Can anyone help?

Hey i think you might have to run revolutionary as administrator... if you dont know how just right click and go to run as administrator... Or maybe try downloading the revolutionary.io again then see if it works and remember to keep usb debugging on

Revolutionary is by far the easiest way to obtain s-off

Hi, yea that worked and followed the instructions from http://www.androidunite.com/2011/10/07/how-to-gain-s-off-and-root-the-sensation-4g/. and got to the last part of the process and when I would use a root checker app it would say that it wasn't rooted. Did I do it right? Is there anything else I should be doing?
Also, I tried installing a custom rom OrDroid and it would let me go through the installation process but won't boot. It just stays in the HTC bootscreen for like 30 minutes.

I Think you should flash this in recovery http://androidrevolution.nl/ARHD/tinyindex.php?dir=Sensation%2F&download=su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip ... you may get errors but just keep flashing it until you have no errors, then you should have root access

Stick this file on your sd card http://www.4shared.com/zip/ej2NktyE/PG58IMG_2.html
then boot into the bootloader and let it do its magic... you should now have 4ext Touch Recovery instead of Clock Work Mod Recovery then you should be able to boot any ics rom...
and here are some cool themes for recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412586&highlight=4ext+themes hope this helps and hope youre able to enjoy ice cream sandwich like i have (sorry its uploaded to 4shared i couldnt upload anywhere else coz im only 17 and dont have a paypal

I've just been prompted to upgrade to ICS through the system update.
Sensation was purchased from Clove.
Now to wait for the battery to reach 35%!
