I have a Telecom SGS1 and in the notification bar it shows when there is data transfer (the 2 little arrows).  Sometimes I see the little 3G symbol next to it but most of the time there is just the letter H, could someone explain to me that this is all about?

I know it is a 3G network which is supposed to be quick so what is the H about, and why is that what normally shows?

H is HSPA mobile broadband

In other words, faster internet speeds than 3G:)

It should flick between 3G and H this is normal

Hi, they are both 3G modes, but when in H its indicated HSPA mode that is the faster mode, 3G can range in speeds from 384kb/s through to mid 2Mb/s, HSPA for which there are down and upload modes that may be in use depending on the provider and channel conditions typically and potentially can go to 7.2Mb/s although both Telecom, Vodafone and 2D have HSDPA+ rollouts that can exceed that yet again.

G = GPRS - Dial up speed (2G)
E = EDGE - Very slow broadband, more usable than GPRS, i think 2degrees is the only network running EDGE around the country (2G)
3G = As per above, 3G Data up to 2mbps ish
H = HSPA - High Speed Packet Access. High speed 3G data, vodafone/2degrees the phone seems to drop to 3G data when idle or in some areas (fringe coverage?), on XT it seems to just be HSPA always on.
