I've ordered a Ainol Novo 7 Paladin today, total cost including ups shipping around $140 NZD, figured i'd have a play around with it and see what it's like, not really a massive cost if it turns out to be a dud.

Positives- for me are it's a capacitive screen running ICS (seems to be more of a beta), and of course the cost.

Possible negatives- MIPS processor limits the apps that can be run on it, I won't know the extent of this till I get it and can look at the market myself, I plan to mainly use this for online browsing etc so this may not be too much of an issue. The other somewhat negative is the lower resloution than higher cost tablets, but I think I will be able to live with it.

Worst comes to worst and I can't stand it I will probably flick it off on trademe and possibly loose a few dollars.

I've set my expectations low! :)

you might be right, lol

received my novo 7 paladin today and have had a play for about and hour.

for ~$NZ120 the hardware is not too bad. display is a little fuzzy compared to my nexus 1 and ipad but text is readable and videos are good. swiping is fast enough.

has a lot a chinese apps preinstalled.

gmail works well but every other app (calendar, google reader, gtasks, simple calendar widget) that uses a google account to sync gives a "Unfortunately, Android system has stopped" error.

I think i read about this in one of the forums, will do some googling tomorrow but it might be a "wait till the ICS 4.0.3 update".

kindle, beautiful widgets, evernote, nz herald, stuff, pulse all work.

google earth, engadget, tranz metro wellington isn't compatible.

but the main reason i got it was to test my apps on ICS (the SDK emulator is so slow it's painful) and a 7" screen and thats all good so i'm sorta happy but looking forward to a s/w update hopefully soon.

Thanks for posting your findings.
That's pretty quick shipping, how did you pay (credit card/paypal etc) and who did you order through?

pc: it might be a "wait till the ICS 4.0.3 update".
Yeah Ainol wise it all seems to be about this.

Paid extra for DHL shipping. Probably should have been more patient and taken the free shipping and maybe the tablet and s/w update might have arrived at the same time, lol.

Got mine through http://www.merimobiles.com/Ainol_NOVO_Knight_Paladin_Ice_Cream_Sandwich_4_0_p/meri0734.htm, would have used pandawill as it was slightly cheaper from them that day but their e-cart wasn't working. Used paypal.

After using both the ipad and novo 7 a bit this morning i think i'll still be getting a faster/larger ICS tablet.

Does the Paladin have the MIPS processor or a more traditional one?

~ Does it do Angry Birds and You Tube etc?

mips.

comes with angry birds preinstalled. no you tube client but other people have installed an app called "magic code" that gives the tablet the capability of running some mips incompatible android apps, like youtube and facebook.

4.0.3 seems to be a significant release for MIPS processor based devices.

Still need to see if software providers will recode to work with MIPS though and for a cheap tablet I wonder if now is the right time to be supporting a new entry processor wise?

Ainols got it's own section over here: http://tabletrepublic.com/forum/mips-ingenic-xburst/

The Ainol Advanced mentioned earlier does not appear to be available any more. There is an Ainol 'Elf' coming which is the same device but with a higher res screen.

There is also an OEM version of the Ainol 7 Advanced which is available, is cheaper but does not have the rear camera. It's version 2.3 but there is hope of course that it will get the ICS 4.0 upgrade at some stage....

Prices are out now and it’s not as good as I’d hoped, but there are a few more models in the mix I didn’t expect.  That older advanced model has an upgrade, called the Advanced 2 for instance.

All have the same CPU and graphics chip.  It’s the good one with a fair bit of power actually and is compatible with most market applications.  I like the CPU’s though, and wouldn’t opt for anything else now as I want the grunt if I need it.

All have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Comments have been that the lower resolution is fine for watching movies, but harder to read text on web pages etc.

Chinese New Year holiday is about to kick off and as such nothing will happen until Feb now.

I think it would be best to wait until then and see what the final prices come out at (These are all presale price listings currently).  Maybe they will be a bit cheaper still.

Prices below are approximate NZ$  All from Pandawill.  They give a 5% off voucher when you join too so a bit less than listed below too.
