neverland: Just tried a video call on skype and it worked fine :)

Other thing I guess is the flash based stuff, like say the TVNZ on demand (that's flash based isn't it?).
How/does this work on the Ainol unit please?

Thanks for your help with all of this.

Oh, and do you mind putting these free/small apps on your device and reporting back how you get on please?

Spirit Level to see if the unit has tilt sensors/gyroscope/accelerometer etc?

Quadrant performance benchmark to see how the device stacks up power wise.

Thanks.

Looks like Ainol have released a new version of the Novo 7, the Aurora. 16GB internal storage, IPS screen, same GPU as the Galaxy S2. Still no android market though, but there are plenty of alternatives. At $230 landed it's certainly worth considering, especially if you have kids that will want to use it. There's a bit of discussion on it here and I'm seriously considering this as my next android purchase.

Edit:
Look like no GPS either.

Hmm... the Aurora looks really nice.

My Herotab C8 just died (along with my celphone), and I am looking to replace them both.  Might go the Aurora.

This might be of use to anyone who receives their tablet in Chinese language format:

Language selection is the first item of this menu...

(I believe this relates to Android 4.x / Ice Cream Sandwich)
Also I think I've seen English New Zealand in there too, so you can spell bro and fishnchups write too cuz.

Yeah I'm going the Aurora I think, just holding off until after the Chinese New Year to see what discount coupons I can locate, and also the US dollar is heading in a good direction for us currently. There are 8GB and 16GB versions.

Also keen to see what the cheaper units come out at. There is still the basic Ainol Advanced II unit yet to be priced, which is the low res ICS update to the original Advanced model. And also the Onda Vi40 Elite which is currently only priced on pre-sell. We've been surprised by how low the pricing had gone from Ainol after the units were confirmed and moved from pre-sell status.

Hi, can you let me know how to buy from Panda Will? Are there extra costs (eg import taxes) Has anyone used a credit card to buy these and are there fees associated with the credit card?

Is there a better place to buy from overseas?

Sorry am a newbie at this so would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Apparently if your gravity sensor is off by 90 degrees, ie works in portrait mode but not landscape then you can try adjusting this here:

setting -> display -> Accelerometer coordinate system -> select Default coordinate system

Great Aurora review here.  Quick technical but really sums up a lot of bits a new owner might want to know about this.

Final pricing on the Ainol Novo 7 units seems to be:

$127 USD for basic advanced II
$147 USD for Elf which gets a higher resolution screen
$167 USD for the Aurora, which gets the better quality IPS screen.

In NZ terms now that's around $155, $180 and $202 which is pretty stunning compared to what you can get here in NZ for that sort of price.  Includes free shipping too, though openly admitting that's slow mail method.

http://www.pandawill.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=novo

Only other current contender is the Onda Vi40 Elite ($219 USD / $265 NZD) but that costs more and has a very similar resolution.  On a 9.7" screen that means a drop in pixel density.  At that price/size I'd go for the NZ sourced Acer A200 unit which is a higher res and dual core, for around $450 at Noel Leemings etc.

Speaking of Acer A200 I picked up one 2 weeks ago was on special at Leemings for $400 which I thought cheap.
Haven't used a whole lot but quite slow given the dual processor but maybe I'm too used to the SGS2 speed.

Certainly handy for checking news etc when at home but would have liked a 3G model but with new quad cores due at this year it isn't a good time to buy.

Seems Acer updates on a regular basis and there seems to be an ICS update due anytime so no need to hunt out custom Roms.

That's a great price on the A200.

For that price I'd rather go that way than risk a China import with lower specs, so not apples for apples sort of thing.

I actually think the 7" size is a category of it's own, rather than a cheaper attempt at an iPad. 7" is very portable and big enough if you want to use in bed etc whilst still being light enough to hold for a while.

I have to admit I was following this thread with interest given all the useful info being posted and really don't need a tablet just wanted one.

It tethers well through my SGS2 so thats handy in itself but the price of the Chinese models and some of the features is quite tempting.

I won't use this daily but more for when away from home therefore the screen size is good for me (old eyes and stubby fingers)
