For those of you who dont spend your life on XDA, DZO of Oxygen fame has been working on an ICS rom for the phone. By all accounts it is very nearly stable and progressing at a rate of knots. It is based on 2.6.35 kernel so you need to have updated to official GB before using this rom. Just give the new official Huawei update a week or so to be ready before seeking out the b522 update which is not so good.

dzo said that he has uploaded the 1.5 update which fixes video recording, but it hasn't yet appeared on SourceForge (possibly SourgeForge upload limits - he has uploaded 2 or 3 today alone!!).

Probably a good thing though, as after reading some of the feedback on the b522 it's probably safer to wait until the official Huawei Gingerbread 2.3.5 to be released.

Let's hope they don't balls that one up as well. And lets hope they be kind and give us an unlocked bootloader this time.

This man (dzo) deserves a DB!! :-)

The Huawei Device FB page seems to be getting hammered with IDEOS X5 2.3.5 issues.

I've been rocking dzo's Oxygen ROM on the X5 for months now, and it has been pretty rock solid.
I'm certainly looking forward to ICS on the X5 when Huawei get their act together with 2.3.5 so I can load ICS over top of it.

Huawei have just released an "Informal Shipping version" of the supposed new 2.3.5 software version.

Does anyone want to be the guinea pig for this one? I kind of need my phone over the next week or so.

Apparently the "Official" version will be coming on 24-02-2012, so next Friday.

So basically the 2.3.5 one released late last year, which I just upgraded a phone to a few weeks back, is rubbish or something?  I haven't had any complaints about it on Vodafone though, so what's so bad about it?

Hoping any new release on Friday or so this week is able to be applied over the last one.

Some hardware on these phones have problems with the b522 firmware, some have none. The updated firmwares are just kernel fixes to correct problems for some other hardware configurations. Possible problems are phone calls being missed because phone does not wake properly, mms not sending attachments correctly and atmel touchscreens not working.
If everything works on your phone, just stick with the b522 firmware.

Hmm, now you mention it...

Me thinks I'll update when the new one comes out, if that's possible, and then be on the lookout later from there for ICS.  Thanks.

Haven't made the leap yet. Going to wait for next Friday to see what comes of the official Huawei 2.3.5 release.

I can't remember anything specific about Wifi tethering or VoIP in this thread, but you might like to have a trawl yourself.

One interesting thing to note about ICS is that Viber is currently unsupported. The next Viber update (whenever that will be) is purported to add ICS support.

Just reading through XDA about people's experience with it and some people have been having major issues with it. i.e IMEI = 0

I personally want to play it safe and wait until a potentially safer 2.3.5 build comes out.

I think most of the imei problems were with the beta builds before b522, but still a couple of people seem to have it happen.
B526  with call wake and mms fix is here:

Hopefully by next Friday, I will have an official gingerbread rocking phone and the ICS build will be that little bit better.

1.7 is out with a stack more fixes. This phone is looking good for ICS and CM9.

What's the link please?

Can it be installed over the previous 2.3.5 release that was subsequently pulled?

Thanks.

I actually ended up installing the B522 Huawei 2.3.5 update, and then loaded Aurora ICS 1.7 over that.

The SourceForge link to the files on the first post of that thread don't seem to be working well, so he uploaded it to Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/ics-aurora/downloads/list

I've actually just gone back to regular B522 2.3.5 because I was finding the overall UI of the Aurora ICS ROM a bit clunky and laggy. Some people don't seem to be having those issues though. I suspect the various different hardware iterations that have appeared across the life of the X5 are causing some compatibility issues.

And, in actual fact, the B522 Huawei stock ROM seems pretty snappy in itself.
I think I will eventually go back to Aurora ICS at some point, though.

I've been switching between Aurora ICS and B522 at the moment, and use B522 during daytime...

1.7 was reasonably good, I had everything I need working on it, bar camera rotating images taken, which dzo has fixed and probably in the next update. Overall 1.7 was a tad laggy compare to B522, I have had the auto bright screen all over the places particularly in browser/youtube. had screen stuck in clock for a short moment and not showing unlock pattern etc.

but the new features are probably worth the trade off in a few more releases.

-- oops 1.8 is out.

B526 didn't seem to fix anything, and is advised to steer away by some (same old call dropping, sd card issues).

Has that new official Huawei firmware been released? (which supersedes the recent flop one that people didn't like)
If so, what do people think of it?
has it fixed the Amtel screen issue etc?

There was a sort of official B526 release last Friday (17-02-2012), but on the official Huawei page it still says beta. Someone on XDA referred to it as also "Informal Shipping Version".

The official version is supposed to be coming out this coming Friday (24-02-2012). No word that I've seen yet on what that will actually fix (or break).
