jeffnz: I actually wasn't going to use a case as never did on S2 but was in PBtexh yesterday and they had the Rock case quicksand available. Looked and felt good so bought one thus far pretty impressed. Bit expensive at over $40

I was the same to be honest - the S2 was a little more textured though, so never really felt that I was going to drop it. the S3 is a little more slippery though for some reason. Also, with the curved S3 screen, if it's face down the glass touches whatever surface you put it on.

I would have liked to try one of the Rock cases to be honest, but again, couldn't find any around town.

Where about are you in NZ? I have a Rock case and it is very good quality. If you in Hamilton then you can trail my brand new Rock case :)
I'm still waiting for my S3 so I have no use for the case at the moment. It is just sitting on my office desk along with my other cases and 64GB card and 8 screen protectors.

Lambchop: just noticed the latest google vuideos app isn't root locked.

so root, and use market access .... any movie rentals in the store will play just fine :p

will test on my honeycomb tab later ...

OK - using Market-enabler (http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/) I can install Google Play Movies (on a rooted phone) but when I try to purchase/rent anything it asks to complete the action using a web browser or the play store. Selecting play store does nothing and a web broswer comes up with:

"Sorry! Movies on Google Play is not available in your country yet.
We're working to bring the content you love to more countries as quickly as possible.
Please check back again soon." (https://play.google.com/store/movies?hl=en)

A way around this ??

yeh, you need a vpn.

so to get into the US store, with market access set to a US telco,  i'll turn my vpn on, and then go to the play store app and clear/forcestop ..... then launch it ..and i'm in.

in the past though, the latest version of play videos used to check for root .. and wouldn't work if it found it.

looks like thats not the case any more, at least on ICS mobile

Hahaha you were close. It was the 32GB version. Already paid everything just waiting for the phone call to pick it up from NL. I've spent over $200 on accessories alone but no S3 to test it on.
Once I get it then I will root it and start modifying system files to make my own custom ROM.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in Dunedin, so not really practical.

I picked up my replacement S3 from WHS this afternoon. Such nice people, but they didn't know anything to know what to ask or check to see if I might have tinkered with the phone, therefore voiding warranty.

They didn't have a dark room for me to test the new unit. So I ended up in a free standing filing cabinet of all things.

Two very small marks on the screen, they look like 3 sided boxes without a lid. And where they are positioned means almost always there will be something on the screen that will hide it.

The photos I took with and without the flash were similar in tone.  Nothing blue-ish, or pink-ish going on.

The only thing that differs is my original S3 was manufactured in Korea, this one in Vietnam. I have no idea if it even matters.

So now I feel I've finally got a phone that's for keeps I've put the Xtreme guard (front protector only) on tonight.  And of course it's rooted.

I haven't had any reason to want to flash a custom rom, but now I've the freedom to do so.

JeffNZ, you got robbed with the price of the ROCK case. I paid $21 on TradeMe with a few bucks for courier. Ordered Sunday, arrived Tuesday morning.  It's amazing the mark-up that is put on some products.

IntegerIsNumber, I can fully appreciate spending that sort of money on "things" for the phone. I'm waiting for our custom made leather cases to arrive.  They were around NZ$66 each. The screen protectors, extra USB cables, docks, spare batteries, MHL, ROCK cases. The list goes on.

I'm sure if we all thought about the bits and pieces we've bought along the way we'd all end up with a tidy sum of money on "accessories" :)

But it is a very worthy device that it hardly hurts.

I have a very annoying problem now - I cannot get my laptop to recognize the SGS - I've spent all afternoon tooling around for a fix, but to no avail.  Every time I plug it in, the laptop (W7) attempts to install the mobile MTP device driver, and fails.  Device Manager is showing it as installed, but that it cannot start.

I suspect it was related to me fiddling around with my old I9000 when I was installing SlimROM - some drivers are probably conflicting on the laptop.  Any ideas?

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling Kies etc. . . .

I have no idea if this will help, or just something else to add to your list of "tried and failed".  Lokhor had in his Rooting (un-rooting) guide that you need to install twice.

Once with the Developer Options - USB debugging off. And then with it on.

I suspect you've got USB debugging on.  Try unticking it and then seeing if the driver will load.  Worth a shot?

I'm going to check if it's connecting to my laptop at work tomorrow (it was last week).  If it is, then I'll rebuild my laptop.  If it's not, I'll factory-reset my phone.

Oh the joys. . . .  (Grumble grumble, no mass-storage USB mode grumble etc. . . )

You don't need to rebuild your laptop. Just go into the registry and delete the driver entry. Google is your friend.
It is located in HKLM system.

just flashed I9300XXALF6 ... no issues so far, home button responsiveness seems improved as well ... mind you i've only just rebooted, but seems really snappy about bringing up the ics multitasker .

no wipe, all settings retained, including the fast dormancy changes.

There is no need to disable FD if you're on Vodafone that is what I read but it may be handy if you're on Telecom. I tried that on my S2 and it didn't save any battery when idling. It actually consumed more battery and crashed
