Thanks guys, I think I'm getting my head around it!

There are some things in the S3's stock ROM that I really like and wouldn't like to lose if I switched to a custom ROM. So I guess I would have to carefully compare all the features of any custom ROM I'm thinking of trying out to make sure it has the features I like (for example the toggles in the notification area, customizing the lock screen, burst-mode photos, SmartStay, etc).

Yeah you do lose a few Samsung specific features, however some such as toggles in the notification area can be added (quick install from play store) or via mods.

I must admit with the current ROM I am using the camera is slightly subpar. Still very usable, then again I bet there is a camera app/mod which would solve my problems instantly.

Should we start a specific Samsung S3 ROM/MOD thread?

mecow: the SII thread contains mod related stuff, in the main thread and it's not too bad for clutter, I probably would vote for keeping it in one place.

you don't lose Samsung specific features on all roms, obviously on supernexus there is a lot that is different as it is for a nexus. JB Roms are mostly still alpha or beta so can't expect things to be stable.

For anyone using a Touch2Pay Galaxy SIII on 2degrees with a Touch2Pay SIM, please read this notice now before updating your phone.

The 2D update moved me up to LF2, but as per usual I didn't really read what I needed to do so now need to go to a 2D store tomorrow to replace the sim. It's not a deal breaker though so i'm happy enough I guess.

Hmmm. I just downloaded the firmware update for 2 Degrees but couldn't install due to low battery. Probably not a big deal if I did anyway as I'm just using the balance up on my old card first. I actually got my Snapper SIM on Monday so no idea if it's the "v2" or not. Any way of knowing?

I don't think Samsung generally say what the updates have fixed but usually just a bunch of bug fixes. 2 Degrees will have done their thing on this particular firmware before releasing it.

I've had LF2 on mine since I got it.
Only August 1 but at least two weeks earlier than most people. Lucky me?

It is, so um... yes?

haha

I just don't know that there is any real advantage to the update if it is only 'bug fixes', can't judge it for myself because it is the only version I've had.
(I am in auckland, snapper issues are irrelevant to me at this point)
Most likely benefit would be other people being jealous... anyone willing to satisfy me? No? Ok then, carry on

where is this thread we can go to to talk about SGS3 custom ROMs?
This thread is far too long to wade through everything to get people's experiences about all the various ROMs that are now available

own3d: There isn't any real discussion as yet as I believe the ROM's currently on offer don't rival the stability and speed of the SII ROM's. The SIII is still relatively new and most people I see commenting here are running rooted but stock roms and kernels.

A more active discussion on the custom roms would likely be better on XDA presently I would think.
