Elpie: My phone has been as slow as slow lately, for which I blamed jellybean. Then this morning it started doing random reboots. It's day 220 for me and there is clearly something going wrong. I no longer have a backup phone so am just crossing fingers and waiting patiently.
mine is now 221 days and about a week ago was playing up like yours.  I removed battery and reset and so far going good again. (touch wood)

I've done a full factory reset on mine, and it fixed all my phones problems, and I now have copy and paste again. But I have heard that the problem is likely to reoccur in the future.

But found the whole restore very poor, after doing what afull backup (on a non rooted phone). Firstly Kies full backup and restore doesn't actually do that. It doesn't restore any apps, mainly just photos and music and video. Restoring apps from the play store is terrible, you have to do each app manually. This is one area where Apples IOS on the iphone is FAR superior.
I guess I could have done a full backup by rooting it and using one of the thirdparty apps available, but I won't consider that as rooting voids the warranty. So I can only go by restoring using a non rooted method. This is possibly one of the reasons samsung is ditching android.

1. Do others have redraw issues when pressing home or back after using a browser in particular (sometimes other apps too)? Home screen blank then redraws icons when pushing home or exit.
I thought jelly bean would fix this. I have done a factory reset also. Everything else fine so I don't think it's SDS.
I have tried different launchers with keep in memory option -dodnt help.

2. Is there any difference btw doing a factory reset via the settings menu or ussd code or the android menu (hold volume+pwr+menu)

It's a really frustrating delay when you are wanting to change apps quickly. And maKes the device feel cheap and needing more ram.

Completely stock device.

Cheers for any help :)

mine too but only occasionally it takes few seconds re-draw all icons. this especially happens when exiting from a heavy app for e.g. browser with multiple tabs.
btw i use nova launcher.

Yes - that's the launcher (TouchWiz) restarting, as it was shut down while you were using other apps.

Hi all,

I am watching this thread with bated breath given my s3 seems ripe for a sudden death (day 288 and counting).
Just wanting to know if anybody can tell me what a new message that flashes up constantly since I updated to jellybean means.  I keep getting told "start to processing messages".  Google doesn't give me any clues.  Anyone else encountered it, know what it means and how to get rid of it?

Cheers

Martyn

I haven't seen this message.  Maybe it's not from Android but from a particular app that you've got installed?

I use SanDisk Memory Zone to backup all my apps to Dropbox. Then, after a full reset all you need to do is bring up Dropbox and click on each app to download and install it. It's actually faster than the playstore. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sandisk.mz

Thanks for the suggestion there Elpie - I'm going to install and give this a try :-)

Does SanDisk Memory Zone backup just apps or does it include any databases that apps may have created and use?  Getting the apps restored isn't too hard (it might be slow to restore from the Play Store but at least it works), but what about the apps' data?  I.e. i use the Countdown app for my grocery shopping and I'd like to backup my shopping lists so if I had to restore I wouldn't have to re-enter them all again.

With regard to touchwiz redraw issues, I spent some time debugging this.

The problem is system_server is leaking memory, it slowly grows in size from about 70mb on restart
to 240 odd mb. This means lots of apps are stuck in a state of restarting and touchwiz has to load most times its used. I currently work around it by restarting my phone every couple of days.

Apparently lots of people are reporting the issue and it's fixed in 4.1.2.

Apparently the touchwiz issue still there on 4.1.2, but it is less aggressive. I have to reboot my phone once every week. May be I'm using the Poland ROM hmm...

Missus Peebles blue is playing up at her moment too. Her battery won't charge up even left it over night. Might have to flash 4.1.2 to fix the problem.

Yeah I'm having to reboot every couple of days to stop this and stop the general lag.

It's a right pain.  If you install OS Monitor from the Play Store (GPL, no ads or crap) you'll see system_server (Android OS it's called in the list, but drill into it) increase and increase in size.

It's very annoying.
