mattyjnz:
avecha: Question - If i swap to 2degrees can i keep my Vodafone number?
I know it's only $30 but i don't really wanna pay for a micro sim to stay Voda.

While on the subject of micro sims, what's the general consensus about how people with a standard sim will achieve this?

I guess there are three options;
1. cut it down yourself, with scissors - cost $0
2. purchase a cutter and do it yourself - $25 for a cutter I believe
3. buy a micro sim - cost $30

Don't see the point in going through the process of buying a cutter for $25 when you can just buy a new sim for $30.

I'm tempted to just cut it down myself - as long as you don't cut the metal parts, how hard can it be ?

I think I mentioned it earlier, but in case I didn't, 2degrees quoted me just $5 to supply and setup a new microSIM once I have my new blue GSIII. That's on pay monthly. I'm still going to cut down my existing SIM 'cos if I have to wait as long as I think I will for my new blue phone, I'm not waiting another minute after unboxing it!

bmt: Probably because it is a blatant rip off. People generally don't like being ripped off.

It's not hard to use a scalpel and cut it to size. If you have a scalpel, that is...

Unless you cut yourself, need to take a few hours at the emergency room etc.

Yes it's a high price, but if you use a scalpel and you do it wrong and your phone doesn't work properly.. I dunno.. it's $30 not $100. All the accessories for new devices tend to be a rip really ;)

I don't think I've ever paid for a sim on VF, but I am on account so they are usually more than happy to make sure I have what I need, which is one of the things I like about VF :)

I'd do it now, ask for a micro sim, $5, they are actually standard sims, with the micro cut out anyway. So you don't need an adapter till you break it out of the standard size sim insert. Takes less than a minute to swap over just call 222 I think it is :)

Did mine last Monday, have it in my GS2, waiting to be broken out of it's clip on Thursday morning

Edit: Just tried taking a photo of it, before realising I don't have a second camera with me at work :(

networkn: /me laughs

Happy to spend $1000 on a phone, $250 on accessories, not happy to spend $30 on a proper sim?

Time effort and petrol will come to more than $30 even at minimum wage!

I saw this argument in the Vodafone forums iphone thread.
Thats the way i feel, end of story.

I remember the time Voda was giving sims away. I got 6.

To me it's a whole lot of shambles.

Think Vodas pricing is inline with Telecom:

XT/Voda: $29.95 prepaid, Postpaid free
2Degrees: $5 prepaid, or postpaid keeping existing number, $10 for new number

Just make sure you get the $5 blank sim for 2Degrees if you want to swap. They can't swap the number onto the sims with a number already on them.

Guy at 2Deg store in Auckland this morning said all stores on allocation and that some stores only have 3 units. When he said all stores, he meant "everyone". He also suggested that it was better to pre-order if you could, ni matter which supplier you're with.

So if I per-ordered my blue one with Noel Leeming a couple of weeks ago, do you reckon I'll get it on Thursday?

No, I would say you could count the number of Blue in the country on two hands.

I have just been going through the this exercise for my HTC One X which is currently on Telecom prepaid.  I also have my Desire HD on Vodafone prepaid (full size sim) and am toying with trying the One X on either Vodafone or 2 Degrees.
So
Vodafone will charge $20 for a microsim for an existing customer, $30 for a new one.
2 Degrees charge $5 for a microsim for an existing customer, $20 for a new one.
Don't know about Telecom because the microsim came with the phone.

So if you are on 2D wouldn't you just get the microsim early and either not break it out or put it in a full size holder (I got one supplied with my telecom sim).  I must say I am leaning towards 2D rather than VF, their plans just seem to suit better. So will compare performance with Telecom. Be interesting to see how the SIII performs on the different networks.

Edit: fixed typo.

Man the launch is becoming a bit of a debacle, certainly the possibility that I might have trouble getting one in my hands at release is setting my teeth on edge.
