Hi all,

i have not yet signed up to a data plan, and am therefore on casual data rates, i will connect using mobile data when i have to, and if this picks up i will organise a data plan, but for now, i just want to use wifi.  i set my phone up to not connect to any mobile data network and turn on wifi when i am in range as follows

wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> data enabled -> no tick
accounts & sync -> background data -> no tick

i have found that from a bit of searching around that there are various fixes, but many say i need to enable background data, and i think this also applies not only to setting up my gmail account but also for many apps, and if i select an app on the PC at google play for it to be installed on my phone then i guess i would need it for this too.

my question is, if i enable background date (accounts & sync -> background data -> TICK) but leave my mobile data setting as it is (wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> data enabled -> no tick) will my phone start using mobile data in the background, overiding other settings or will it still require me to turn data on be it 3G mobile data or wifi before it syncs anything.

"Background data" is for any network, without it automatic background syncing won't happen regardless of connectivity.

Leaving "Data enabled" off will disable the mobile data connection. As long as you don't have any letters beside the signal bars in the status bar, then it isn't using mobile data. If it has G, H, 3G or anything else, then it probably is.

"You are" = "You're" - Not "Your".  "They are" = "They're" - Not "Their" or "There".  You probably mean "lose" not "loose".  There's no such word as "Alot".

To let all know, i have found the fix.

enable background data (accounts & sync settings -> bacground data -> tick!) connect to wifi, and presto, i can set up my google account and the market place and any other apps that require background data enabled but using my wifi connection as opposed to my mobile data connection.  As i have left wireless& network settings -> mobile networks -> data enabled -> not ticked / not enabled.  So it shows, having background data on is required, and this is routed through the availble netowrk be it wifi or mobile data, depending which is on.  i wonder what the preference is if both are on...
