Want an andriod based mp3 player. I know Cowon do them and their audio quality is THE best, but their specs leave a lot to be desired.

Samsung do them, but they limit internal storage to 8GB (pain!)

What else should I consider? Need 32gb internal plus SD card slot.

I was thinking an older gen phone, but the sound quality just won't match up

Thoughts?

There aren't any actual audiophiles. Just people who know a lot of technical details about audio hardware, software, encoding, recording and playback AND who describe themselves as audiophiles.

Plenty of audio enthusiasts around. I hear the Wolfson DACs are the shiz, so find a device with one and check out some reviews.

A decent EQ makes a huge difference on the Android handsets I've owned (P500, Galaxy S1, S2, S3), and headphones do make a big difference (though I've never toyed with the expensive ones, just better classes of cheap ones). Current faves are the Galaxy S3 stock earphones.

Maybe I'd enjoy music even more with $100 earphones? Or $500 earphones? And a seperate preamp? and... and... and... and...

Question - why do you need 32GB internal plus SD card?

tonyhughes: Question - why do you need 32GB internal plus SD card?

I suspect it might have something to do with FLAC. ;)

Even in MP3 I have 100GB of music.

That engaget link was tempting...until it said no expansion slot.

Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 has the Wolfson DAC and is relatively compact. Basically a Galaxy S without the phone part. An old version of Android, but if it's an MP3 player, I doubt that matters much.

Specs say "Up to" 32GB memory card, forums have successfully tested 64GB though.

Plays FLAC natively too.

If you want some good earbuds, I've been very impressed by the SoundMagic's. Soundessentials appear to be the local agents, the E10's have been very well reviewed. I "only" have the MP21's and for inexpensive earbuds they sound marvellous - I got them at the time because they have a microphone & answer/hangup/skip track button on them. They don't appear to be available in NZ and I don't recall where I got them from though :(

"You are" = "You're" - Not "Your".  "They are" = "They're" - Not "Their" or "There".  You probably mean "lose" not "loose".  There's no such word as "Alot".

Will check out the 3.6

It doesn't need to be fast, it doesn't need an amazing screen. All I want is something with good audio, expandable memory, but also allows me to download the mp3 apps I've paid for on Google Play.

I read the Parrot Zik Bluetooth headset are a surprise package when it comes to Bluetooth audio.

Given they have a companion Android app to 'tune' them and sport NFC they make a good mobile 'Audiophile' Bluetooth headset.  That's if one is allow to use Audiophile and Bluetooth in the same sentence.

Interesting styling too, that may have it's detractors.

I use JetAudio apk with OGG encoded music on an XPERIA S with a Sennheiser PX100-II headset.

I couldn't detect the difference between FLAC and Ogg, so I just went with Ogg.. how sad am I.

Checked out the 3.6 and the 4.0 both are limited to 8gb internal. Just not enough.

Leaning towards the Cowon D3 at this stage.
