So if you want to rate and review an app on Google Play you now must join Google+

Geez the first thing I do on a new phone is disable Google+ I guess I won't be reviewing any more app's.

I think Google will backtrack this one honestly.

Most likely after a backlash from developers.

I am not going to use Google+ to be able rate/review apps, so no more ratings and reviews from me.

I'd say that there will be a dropoff in ratings/reviews in the order of 50-99%, and that Google+ users will increase by less than if they'd spent $1MUSD worth of their own Adwords advertising.

Tying rating apps for your mobe to an entire social network that's already not doing well sounds like a Microsoft move to me, not Google!

Fail.

It may be separation of like minded data that has caught Google's eye, where running AND maintaining a forum for Google Play Store along with other forums and social media sites. It would make sense to consolidate and refine all efforts under one umbrella [bumbershoot] and thus reduce the separation of powers.

A consolidation of all Google social media and comments in one place. SQL/DB admin's would soil their pants with excitement. I know that's how my 'bit vector' mind works.

Doesn't mean I have to like it though.

Out of interest I posted a comment/review and didn't have to jump through any additional hoops. Now I'm the only one under that application with my name next to it. Everyone else is a Google-User.

May have to look at what Google+ profile I have as I've never used it before.

OH AND YOUR Google ACCOUNT PICTURE IS NOW DISPLAYED!!!! :-)

Yet another social media profile.  Go on private Frazer one more time. :-)

What's next? I wonder if this is a precursor to having to sign into Google+ to use Google Play.

Doubt it. If it was that PLUS required public profile, I'd jump back to iOS or over to Windows Phone.

Used a Windows Phone for the first time last week - WOW - really nice. So much more cohesive experience than Android. Still a raving Android fanboy for now though.

Probably to stop fake reviews and a way to identify reviewers for them, as I presume otherwise google will be liable for any reviews people post. The do the same thing with apples store, linking peoples reviews to an account, so it is becoming standard. Personally I think it is a good thing that you have to be logged in to post a review, however not a fan of requiring user to use google +, as I don't think it is a good service. Good way though to get people to sign up to goole+. Just remember that social media users aren't customers, they are product being sold.

So what is wrong with signing up to Google + ? Makes a change from every website that requires you to sign into Facebook to see content etc.

Sites require you to sign in to Facebook to see content? Which sites do you visit?

Workstation: Intel DH67CL ~ i5-2500 ~ 4GB Corsair RAM (x2) ~ Intel X25-M 80GB SSD

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1564 ~ i5-520M ~ 4.00GB RAM ~ 500GB SATA HDD ~ Win7 Home Premium x64

Common misconceptions.

I don't have a Facebook account either - the only time I needed a FB account was when I went to try Spotify, so I gave it a miss.

Yes!...[In a wine is out and Beer is in sort of way]

I was very impressed with ICS as you can disable Twitter, chat, Google+, Facebook and most other bloatware without having to have root access on your phone.

On my 'standard' GB firmware I removed something like 35 apps after root access.

As I under stand it and correct me if I'm wrong, by having a Gmail account you have a Google+ profile anyway and all that's happening is the posts/reviews you write are listed under your Google+ profile.

Effectively nothing is changing in Google Play and all that's happening is the breadth and usage of your comment is extended and now used as recommendations to friends and like mind app installers beyond the Google Play store.

You can now see this in Google Play under the recommended apps section which are +1'd

Besides, who cares about Google+ when the world ends in less than three weeks!!! Sealed

Next time you're on Google Play, check out the reviews of a popular app.

Click on See all> and scroll down through the reviews and watch the user icons change, it's a hard case.

Google failed a bit at marketing what Google+ is, it appears most people in this thread think it's a Facebook-like social network. It's nothing of the sort, in fact even the Facebook-like social-stream is extremely different from Facebook.

Google+ is simply you on Google. When you "sign up" for Google+ to use all the features of the Play Store this has nothing to do with using a social network (in the Facebook sense).

A massive amount of people use the Instant Upload feature on Android and so have a Google+ account, does this mean they have to use the social-stream aspect of Google+? Not at all.
