Since upgrading my wife's SGS1 to the Telecom official load of 2.3.3 she has had an intermittent problem of the screen going blank and displays nothing when the home button  is pressed , SMS or calls comes in.  Nothing brings it back to life apart from   force powering off or pulling the battery out. This was happening several times a week so I assumed it was an app that was causing it.  The fone is 18 months old.

After a couple of weeks of this  happening I factory defaulted the fone and left it a week and it seemed to have fixed it. I restored the backup, upgraded the default apps and put back Swiftkey, Whatap and Air NZ Mpass  the three apps she mostly uses and left the rest as she also has a tablet.  It seemed OK for a further couple of  weeks but it's started happening again.

I've told her next time it happens take it back to the local Telecom store and show them as no one will believe it  if you take it back working again.

No doubt it will be sent away with some reason like "water damage " or the like being the answer from Telelogistics because it's out of warranty at which time she will have a go at the CGA.

Anyone  seen this before and if so any ideas ??

If we weren't treated like a tech 3rd world here and  didn't have to jump thru so many hoops I would buy a Nexus 4 and give her my old SGS2

TIA.

Being out of warranty i'd be inclined to put CM9 or something on it instead, and see if the problem is still there.

Could preclude you from CGA remedies though.

I agree with tony although would suggest the official firmware first from official firmware

if this works then you can play around with custom roms if you feel the need.

An update to this.

It died several times early December. Once about an hour after I had done a back so we took it to the Telecom store at St Lukes AKL and showed the staff the problem. My wife had bought an extended warranty with this fone so it was still covered. Anyway it came back today with a new mother board. So far so good installed and updated the Play Store apps but it took me over two hours to get Kies to connect to the fone to restore the backup. What a heap of junk this software is. I've always had problems with this fone and other basic Samsung fones with Kies. My own SGS2 seems to connect in about 30 seconds..

Update to the update. Today it did it twice again. Apart from the Telecom supplied defaults the only two apps installed are Whatap and Swiftkey. Guess next time it does it again it's back to the Telecom store. If they did indeed change the main board last time what's left apart from the screen or screen sensor?

Edit.  Just did a Google search and this seems quite common with Android 2.3.3 and the SGS1 back in July 2011

If main board was changed the handset should have a different IMEI

Does it happen with swift key removed?

I have no idea what the IMAI was before .  I have removed Swiftkey and will see what happens.  It may take anything from an hour to a week for this to happen again..

Also Just did a Google search and this seems quite common with Android 2.3.3 and the SGS1 back in July 2011.  The suggestion was to go to Android 2.3.4  but Telecom NZ does not support that load and as she has a two year warranty she wants it fixed or replaced and she can be a real Rottweiler over this sort of stuff...  Laughing

Thanx John.

It happened over nite again so this morning I factory defaulted the fone, no app updates and contacts from her SIM card. As we are going away this week I'm taking a spare flip fone with me so that if it happens again she has some service and she will take it back next week..
