Posted this in the Quickflix thread, but might be interesting as a topic here in the Android section...

Quickflix has launched a partnership with DishTV to bring their app pre-loaded on their HDMI-enabled, Android TV stick smartvu

So there's a Quickflix Android app...available????  Am I missing something???

Is this just two brand name companies combining to sell an Android HDMI/Internet access point?

If the 'stick' doesn't have a dual core CPU and a Mail-400MP quad core or better, doesn't that just make it another HDMI Android TV stick??

I wonder what this device would do that my Sony phone with HDMI out doesn't already do.

I see some of the newer Android TV boxes/sticks now come with DVB-T, bluetooth, 3G and RJ45 support.

I have an Ethernet/HDMI Android box plugged into the TV and it's used most days for games, weather, email, IMDb, watching the odd 720p movie (reformatted) or checking a street address on Google Maps. Oddly Russian TV has become a bit of a favourite of late.

My box is not powerful enough (1GHz CPU, SGX540 GPU) to view 720p with full 5.1 sound though so that's something to consider with many of these Android HDMI sticks/boxes.

Having access to Android from your TV at the press of a button really is a joy.

But you really need an Android TV stick/box that does more than just Angry Birds, YouTube and emails.

This is obviously not for YOU. Remember that this is a packaged solution for those people who think "Cool, it would be neat to have a smart TV without paying the amount of money the big name manufacturers are charging".

"Oh, look, I have a spare HDMI input, might as well plug this thing. There's no configuration, it's ready to use and even have Quickflix".

Come on folks, not everyone around the country can get an Android device, configure correctly and be ready to run.

Following your logic there would be no need for a TiVo device or any other DVR because everyone should be building their HTPC from the scratch.

They are a great little invention.
I have a 'dumb' tv that I would like to give some 'smarts' to - I am not keen on buying direct from a chinese website - and have noticed a couple of these devices coming into the shops in the last week or two.

PBtech has the improbably named tizzbird N1G at about $160

There is the JCmatthew box

I also saw a JC Matthew USB Android dongle somewhere earlier today - cant recall where exactly. Cant find it on their website either - so I suspect its new.

Might have to get santa to get me one if I have been a good boy!

it looks like the quickflix android app is not availabke on googleplay, so your device needs to have it built in (like this one) or on its own store (like Samsung).

Dont know why they would do it that way, but probably makes it easier than designing apps for hundreds of different android devices when you can cover most of the market with just a few.
