Looking for best QR code reader / creator and possibly in same app barcode reader... i have tried a few and seems i cannot find a good one, two of can read QR codes, 1 of which has more options for creating QR codes than the other, but none really read barcodes well. but i am wondering if this is an app issue or a phone issue, i have no flash or auto focus...

Hi I use SCAN on my SGS1 works great never had an issue with it, my wife also uses it and sometimes has issues due to her phone having a less than stellar camera.

For some reason I don't think you can really scan barcodes reliabily (at all?) if you don't have autofocus. QR works OK though.

Scanning barcodes without auto-focus is almost impossible, you have to move back and forwards until the image is sharp enough for the app to read it.

One thing I have tried is to zoom the camera in which then allows the camera to be further away from the code putting the camera at a distance where the fixed focus is giving a good enough focus to work.

A little off topic, but has anyone come across retailers banning people scanning barcodes in stores with their phone?
I was told by a friend that they were told off by one store.

I've not come across that and I'd tell them to take a running jump if they did.
A friend over in Australia mentioned it is the norm for people to come into shops on the phone with their friend/partner at another store and then get the two stores to compete for price on the spot driving pricing down.
Getting online and comparing prices is completely fair and if the company is trying to ban people from doing so then there is every chance they are not competitive on price and they know it.

I haven't seen this service in New Zealand but overseas (Europe I think) you can go into a shop, scan a barcode and you can then see who else has that product nearby and at what price.

Pricespy and Priceme have apps that work in a similar way, they may not have barcodes but you can search by the details available. It's been a while since I've used the apps but I'm fairly certain you can narrow down searches by location.
