I've eliminated WP7 (HTC Trophy) and Symbian^3 (N8) from the running, so now looking for the Android that is the closest match to an iPhone in form factor, camera and UI response. I've got a Samsung SII (work) and a LG P500 (discarded), this will replace a now deceased Nokia N8. Looking at the same price as the iPhone and ideally from VF (rather than an import). Ps. I’ve eliminated iPhone 4S (tried my wifes one) due to it’s dependency on iTunes (or worse, cloud) for content management and turning WiFi hot-spot on and off is tedious (Android have a single press widget I use on the SII).

What's wrong with the SII? It's one of the current flagship Android phones. Asus eee pad transformer iPod 2G Windows 7 PC Lots and lots of Nikon camera gear

Has Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box but the specs aren't as good as SII in terms of processor/camera but good value for money. Plus you've got the knowledge that the phone will carry the latest updates first as its a Google device

The likes of Samsung and HTC seem to have decided there is no point releasing a powerful device with a screen size under 4.3 inches... Looking at Vodafone your best bet is easily the Nexus S Technology Journalist for Mobile Kiwi Twitter: @ArchSerpo

It's price seems a bit good to be true, have you had a chance to use one to get a feel for it's responsiveness (the LG at the same price was quite slow)?

Ive never actually had any hands on experience with either that I can remember but the Nexus S has Samsung's Hummingbird chipset which is regarded by anyone with the knowledge as better than the LG's (you mean the P970 right?) OMAP 3 series. Plus the Nexus S has a un-touched stock UI as opposed to the LG having some custom UI which is only going to slow it down Technology Journalist for Mobile Kiwi Twitter: @ArchSerpo

The LG was a P500h (Telecom).

The Nexus S is a great phone and even better with ICS, I got mine specifically because it was cheap and had the benefit of direct Google support in terms of updates rather than the usual hit and miss with carrier OTA.

Plus you've got the knowledge that the phone will carry the latest updates first as its a Google device The Nexus One was supposed to be the same way, but the moment the S came out, the One was put on the back-burner with slower updates etc. It wouldn't surprise me to see the S falling behind now that the Galaxy Nexus is out... Edit: I must learn to check over these posts before hitting submit!

The phone I'm seriously looking at getting at the moment is the Sony Xperia Ray http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_ray-3972.php It has a really nice screen (3.3inch 300ppi Vs the iphone 4s 3.5inch 300ppi), 8mp camera and isn't a giant phone ( the biggest plus in my book) , plus all the extras like dlna. It also has cynoagen mod support which I like too.
