In the chorus UFB areas, there are places currently with P2P "business fibre", will those places be eventually converted to GPON fibre with the correspondingly lower prices? Or are they stuck with the more expensive service?

It's not so much a matter of converting it, it's a matter of building a duplicate network as the architecture is completely different.

As for the "expensive" price, it's because the service is a dedicated CIR. The same equivalent service over UFB in a UFB area will cost exactly the same price as a Chorus P2P connection costs at present as Chorus dropped their pricing in August 2011 to match UFB. P2P offerings are also available in GPON areas for those people who want dedicated CIR's in excess of 100Mbps.

If you want a lower quality product, ie a lower grade UFB GPON plan, you will have to wait until the UFB GPON network is built, either by Chorus, or the LFC in your area.

p2p fibre (business fibre) and GPON fibre are 2 very different architectures. Even for areas with GPON fibre I would still use p2p fibre where there is a need for a reliable and consistent service.

the so called 'conventional' fibre dosent need to be converted - it can be used to provide gpon services now (providing GPON services are available from the exchanges that the fibre is connected through) in the same way some schools are being connected now to UFB/GPON, when there is no ufb network at present being built near them, by extending fixed fibre and using optical splitters fitted onto the exch OFDF (Optical Distribution Frame)

I totally understand why P2P is more expensive than GPON. But I don't want to pay that much and am willing to trade for lesser performance and reliability.

So does this mean I can request GPON services in a P2P area?

As far as im aware Yes - provideing a: There is an existing chorus fibre connection, b: Gpon services are available from the local exchange and c: and as always your ISP/RSP is providing connections from that exchange

I should have added that distance from the exchange is also critrical ( the connection at this stage must be within the business fibre zones as shown on the chorus network upgrade map - http://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map

OK cool, I'm in the Business Fibre zone on the map. How do I start the process?

Contact your ISP so see what they have to say.

As mentioned above you also need to be serviced by an exchange that has GPON gear. With this type of install I also believe existing Chorus fibre pricing may apply for installs, not the UFB business install price. This scenario has really only been used to deploy fibre services to schools at present.

Ah that is very useful information. How many Exchanges outside of the year 1/2/3 areas are GPON capable? There must be a number of addresses that I know where p2p fibre is installed in he building but won't have GPOn for ages.

I've just put a request through to Unleash as the RSP linking to this thread. Will let you know if Chorus give them the green light. Got 2 addresses, one with Chorus p2p fibre already in the building and another with it on the street outside.

On the new Chorus map the "Business Fibre" areas are now also labelled with "UFB before Jun 15". I guess that's our answer.

It seems to vary by location; various "business fibre" areas in Whakatane are returning April 2013 or June 2014. These seem to be the same dates as the "real" UFB rollout across those same areas, which makes me wonder whether the business areas are being converted at all.
