Hello, once again I have a problem. I have the wharfedale ht pack (2x9.5, 2x9.0, 1x9cs, 1xwh-s8) with the Onkyo TX NR515. The issue is that when I do the set up / calibration the centre speaker just makes a loud 'pop' and thats the end of the calibration. The annoying thing is, it seemed to be working fine a few moments before it done that. The auto calibration made it round to the rear right (surround) before stopping. So we made sure the speaker cable was connected properly, and now the centre doesnt work. Ive tried swapping the 9.0 with the centre and the same pop sound occurs. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be (im guessing the receiver?). It has the latest firmware update. I can borrow another tx nr515 if need be, but if someone actually knows what the problem is then would save a lot of hassle getting it and transferring speaker cable etc. Thanks

The centre speaker is broken or the centre channel of the amp? Take it back for replacement

Thanks for the reply. yea that would be my guess. Im guessing I will need to try another reciever (a friend has one) to see which one is broken. Saying that, I did try the bookshelf speaker and it didnt work so should be the receiver Cheers

Plug your centre as a front left or right. Why do you want to borrow another receiver

just tried it and centre speaker works. Didnt try it before cos wasnt sure if it would be ok to try the centre on left. Will take it back now. I'm pretty sure they dont have any in stock, so might ask for an alternative. Do you know which receiver would be of similar spec? (This has 7.1, 4k upscaling) Thanks!

Got a replacement and it works fine now. Very pleased! Just one more thing, is there a way of connecting the freeview aerial to the receiver? Ive had a look (and google) but not sure how to do it. Cheers

It doesn't have a tuner, so no, you can't connect the aerial to it. You'd need a Freeview STB connected to one of the HDMI inputs.

Just had a rhought this is the forth onkyo that's blown a centre amp that i've come across. And i'm not a home theatre junkie just a normal person pottering about

I guess you got a Friday unit... But yeah, Onkyo aren't renowned for being bullet proof. But as long as your one works, you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies. Thats a tad annoying, but not the end of the world. Tv speakers for rubbish tv, then loud surround sound for films! Yea there is question marks over their build quality, but the Yamaha or pioneer was double. Fingers crossed eh. Thanks all

You could plug the UHF antenna in the FM input but it's not ideal. Freeview uses a UHF antenna for approx 400 - 800mhz. FM needs a VHF antenna for 88 - 108mhz. Depending on location a short piece of wire stuck in the FM antenna socket usually works for local FM stations. You wont get Freeview Radio though as there is no digital tuner present.

Thanks all Your TV should have an optical audio output, which you should be able to connect to your receiver to get decent ausio when watching TV.

I just wanted to use the surround speakers for watching freeview tv. I have freeview cable straight from antenna to tv. Yes im pretty sure my tv does have optical out (panny 50ut 50) So if I have a optical cable from tv to receiver can get surround sound watching freeview tv? Sorry, don't want to get it wrong. Thanks

As you have the UT50, you can use ARC (Audio Return Channel) on HDMI 2 to send audio back to the AVR (HDMI Main output). No need to use Optical.

Ah right, I thought I read somewhere about ARC not needing optical. So the issue I have is connecting the freeview aerial to the receiver. From what I understand this cant be done, would need a freeview box for hdmi connection. Is that right? Also, as my in-laws toshiba doesnt have ARC will they need the optical cable for sky (normal sky not mysky). They have same receiver & speaker package as me.
