Hi,

I have been Telecom broadband since arriving from Australia in early 2008. The service and speed has been great up till 8 weeks ago when I switched to the 500Gig plan. ( I have 3 kids. 2 are teenagers who are constantly on the net) Since the change my connection speed has dropped from 2.1Meg to 1.4 Meg, even though there have been no changes to the line attenuation and SNR.

I logged this as a fault with Xtra, who have had a tech out to check for any issues from the property to the exchange, via the cabinet that I am connected to. According to them, no fault has been found.
I have had the master splitter/filter changed as well as the wiring (CAT6) at my expense all to no avail.
We have tried 3 different modems (Vigor and Netgear) with no change and all 3 show exactly the same line attenuation of 15dB and 8dB. Interleave is off.

Basically everything has been covered, checked and rechecked with no success.
My concern is that been on a 500Gig plan, I am now in a high usage pool like the good old Big Time plan, or somehow my speed is being artificially throttled.

I have been on ADSL since late 1999 and having been through all the initial teething issues of early broadband, I am confident in my knowledge of ADSL problem solving skills.

Any suggestions or feedback will be appreciated.

Regards

Mark

PS I did reboot the modem!

On this plan as well. I have ZERO problems with speed.

I wonder if there's an error with the port at the exchange/cabinet. I did have one horrible speed drop for a few days and something somewhere was changed like a port setting and I was away laughing, other than that, it's been perfect.

When you say "2.1Meg to 1.4 Meg" are you referring to "Mbit" (Megabit) or "MB" (Megabyte)? There is a significant difference in the two. If you are referring to Mbit then your speeds seem significantly low even before the plan change. What sort of line stats are you getting anyway (especially the attenuation)?

Also did the speed drop happen precisely after the plan change or was it a gradual change? If it didn't happen precisely after the plan change I would call it out as a coincidence like said above.

Hi Bill,

Congestion would only affect throughput and not the connection rate, in my opinion.

Hi Aidan,

That would be MB - connection used to be extremely fast with good pings.

Attenuation is 16dB down and 8dB up, or there abouts.

Change in speed occured at the same time as plan change - I had to get them to turn off interleave off, as it was put on again with the change.

Feel free to email me your home line number and I can check your line. But if you're getting 2MB/s then that's pretty much the limit of ADSL.

I work for Spark, but as always my views are my own.

Hi Damager,

They did have a tech check it out late one Saturday afternoon (5.30pm). Not sure if he checked both the cabinet and exchange ports, as the connection only went down for about 10 mins, once. Maybe he was in a hurry to get home, as I dont think that he could have checked both ports in that time.

I see what you mean you definitely had some nice speeds ta 2+ MB/s (For ADSL2+ at least). Just to be clear; you had interleaving turned off before the plan change, and you now have it turned off? However the situation is, interleaving can definitely affect your connection and changing plan can also have your connection's profile reset back to default. I would get onto support and just make sure they actually turned it off, as: 1) It can take a while to have the changes take affect due to Chorus, 2) I've heard several posts of telecom support not actually turning interleaving off properly when requested.

Hi plambrechtsen,

I used to get 2.1MB/s until the change in plan, then it went down to 1.4MB/s, which is a significant drop.
Absolutely no change to line stats.
Will send you my number.

Hi Aidan,

They assured me that it is off and is reflected in a low ping test to Speednet.
Stats on router also show it as being off.

Well in that case this sounds like Telecom's "unlimited data" plan all over again. I have noticed a few similar posts on GeekZone today regarding the same issue after changing plan. Nonetheless I hope you get it solved! Just out of curiosity, are you in coverage for VDSL? As that may be worth looking into if you have a high demand for speed in your household (or even Fibre/Cable).

Hi Aidan,

Lets see what they come back with. VDSL coverage ends on my property in my area, so will possibly have a look at that.

Except the Traffic Shaping thread is in all probability a customer served by a Conklin. If that is the case it's not a Telecom specific issue, it will affect every ISP.

Is this your sync speed or results from a speedtest? What are your sync stats? If it's from a speedtest site where are you testing to?
