yea the data isn't of concern, just a mates flash drive that randomly stopped working. tried other ports. can't assign letter to the drive because freezes disk management lol. i think its a dud, just wondering if someone else had a last resort idea.

Hi,

Just to confirm is the drive plugged in when you start windows?

Or when the windows is running you plug the drive and then it freezes the windows.exe?

What windows are you using? Have you tried a different version? eg if you using WinXP have you tried Win7?

It could also be a virus & or a dead USB.

The prices for USB now days is so cheap its not worth the hassle.

However...

One thing I have noticed is that some USB drives don't like to work if formatted NTFS you can try to format it in FAT32 and see if that works. If it doesn't show up in My Computer try using command prompt or disk part.

You can also try a free program called: Easus Partition Magic

Let me know how you get on.

hi man yea thanks for the reply, tried it on win7, xp and mac still no good. when i type in disk part with the usb in, cmd freezes and crashes. i only insert the usb after windows loads. yea they are cheap, just a shame because it was the latest usb 3 and quite a decent size. guess its bin time.

If it was bought recently I would take it back as it would be under warranty. Most electronics come with 1 year warranty.

Good luck :)

and Consumer Guarantees act means if you didn't buy it for work purposes and can still find the receipt, you could argue for a 3-4 year replacement I would say

But given that we are probably talking about a $10 drive, whats the point. You'll spend more than that in petrol going to the retailer
