Hi there,

I am currently downloading Ubuntu desktop edition to run off a DVD.

Looking at Persistence mode, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence, I'm wanting to use a USB stick as a storage device. But reading those instructions, I'm not sure whether those are commands to prepare the USB stick within Windows. Can anyone clarify this for me, and if they are not Windows based, where can I find instructions to prepare the stick in Windows?

Those commands are all linux. To be honest the easiest will be to boot your live DVD. You will then have a linux system and then can copy / paste the commands.

Just curious, why do you want to run Ubuntu from a LiveCD? Installing directly to HDD is much faster and more reliable and it can be installed either alongside (dual boot) or inside Windows (as an application) if you don't want to replace Windows.

I'm planning on getting a desktop (second hand, but with 512MB-1GB of RAM, 30-40GB of HDD) to install Ubuntu onto.

I want to play around with it prior.

Have you looked at WUBI? It's an application that installs Ubuntu from within Windows. When you're done with it you can remove it from add/remove programs like other windows software. It's an official Ubuntu app so it's well supported and would probably be easier and faster than running a live CD.

I have.

I however do not have time to switch between Windows and Ubuntu by rebooting as a long term solution.

Also, it seems that uninstalling Wubi is rather difficult.

Just run Ubuntu off the USB with persistence. Use Unetbootin, theres an option: "Space used to preserve files across reboots"
