Topic # 114695 27-Feb-2013 22:32 Send private message

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my father internet services at his new house (1.6km from his old one in Wakefield, Nelson) except Snap have said they're on a waiters list for at-least 2 years, I called up to confirm this too, but they're out in a rural area of Wakefield.

I thought about RBI with Vodafone except the coverage with Vodafone out here is very poor whilst Telecom mobile broadband is an option, if I was to do that I'll need to get a wireless router for them to run off Telecom + get their phone running over SIP.

The other option is to use a WISP except looking at pricing suggests that the companies I have checked are rather expensive and have little information on their site.

Can anyone recommend the direction I should be heading with this whilst attempting to keep costs down?

Cheers,

Just on a side note - I investigated a bit further on RBI through Vodafone, I'd assume from this they're not able to get it?

I would grab a pair of ubiqity m5's then find someone friendly in the line of sight who has broadband and offer to pay their bill if they let you mount a dish on their roof. A friend of mine did this up near kaukapakapa who is on a wait list and is getting his broadband from neighbours half a km down the road.

The Pacific Net is operating down there - and I think Sam James put up a few transmitters around nelson a couple of years ago but not sure if they are still being operated by someone else - he is in auckland now.

Looking at TPNet's pricing at
http://www.tpnet.co.nz/index.php?page=Broadband
it appears it will be cheaper to look at an RBI based system.

Talk to Mike Smith at Ultimate Mobile in Christchurch. He operates over the vf RBI network at a much better price point than vodafone retails.

I think there may be one other WISP down that way but not sure if they reach over to nelson - there is a couple around milford and blenheim but i dont know the geography very well.

Cheers for that Ray.

Sam James - wow, that goes back a bit, I helped him in the past with setting up some gear but I wouldn't go as far as trusting him personally (long story, involves a girl and me being stupid at a young age). I have got Unleash currently looking at options for them but will get in contact with Mike Smith and see what could be done, they're able to get BUBA over their phoneline except it's more about finding somebody competent that would provide BUBA over EBUBA since most companies have migrated from that.

I have phoned Snap twice finding out what the go is except after saying they will contact me back they still haven't - I'm guessing it's a no through them.

The problem with pacific.net is I know some months my parents would chew through 5gb quite easily whilst other times they won't touch it, they do a bit of Skype - I'm tempted to see if any neighbors would help out a bit with providing internet via a wireless link - it could be a very good option.

Michael you also need to actually talk to WISPs. They don't typically update their web sites with up to date pricing much, but they do have the ability to cut deals.

Awesome, did that and thepacific cut me a pretty good deal, so that'll work, just depends on what the parents think.
