Topic # 114674 27-Feb-2013 10:55 Send private message

Hi,

I am looking to get an ATV3, it fits my needs almost perfectly, and we all have iOS devices in our house. (I would love to Jailbreak the unit and put XBMC on it, but that looks like it may never happen).

Can I get Netflic on a NZ purchased ATV3?

Has anyone done this?

I would sign up to Unblock-us and use their DNS (or other suggestions? - would rather not use a VPN).

Do I need a US based credit card for Netflix? Seems to be conflicting information out there on this one.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Yes

Yes, lots of people, including me

I use unblock-us. Unotelly provides a similar service.

Some people have found you do need one, but when I signed up to Netflix it didn't require one.

What you also need to do is get a US iTunes account.

No need for a US credit card for Netflix, but you will need one for HuluPlus.

You can setup a US iTunes without any payment method set.

I use them all with Unblock-US and a US-based credit card and address from my shipping forwarder.

Nice quick answers, thanks.

What is the process for setting up a US itunes account? Do I just put a US address in there?

When I signed up in December, Netflix no longer seemed to accept NZ credit cards - I use Entropay.

Even if you do get a NZ card to work you will have to nominate a US post code with Netflix that incorporates your NZ post code (which is embedded in your Credit card). I could not find a combination of numerals that actaully produced a valid US zip code (5 digits vs our 4 digits) based on where I live in NZ. If you do get a valid code it will most likley be in a US state that has sales tax so add at least another 7% to the US$7.99pm.

Because I used Entropay I was able to nominate a zip code on Netflix that is in a state with no sales tax - so US$7.99pm for me. However Entropay cards do have a fee built into them - I think it is 5% eg to load US$200 on to your Entropay card will cost US$210 for example. No fees however apply to the monthly Netflix transaction.

The reason Entropay works and a NZ credit card does not (at least for new accounts with Netflix) is that NZ cards have address verification (post code) built into the card and Netflix (as they are required to do by card companies) check this agrees to your US zip code. However Entropay does not provide address verification so Netflix does not need to make this check.

Thanks steve2222.

Do you know if the Travel prepaid cards work (like AirNZ OneSmart)? Surely they don't have a postcode built in?

I just had to change my netflix card from BNZ Visa to ANZ Mastercard.  Had to get a new Visa card number (due to possible dodgy website purchase (no not porn)).  When I tried to change my Visa details netflix would not take the new card number so used the mastercard.  You can also buy your Hulu subscription through i-tunes on the apple tv (as long as you have a us i-tunes account setup with money on it).

Not sure. I have seen some comments on here to suggest they do work. Give any card a go and see what happens.

My experience suggests to me that Netflix changed their procedures about December last year. I originally signed up in about October using a US Prepaid Credit Card of about US$25. I then set my on-going payment to be from a US PayPal account (but you still have the issue of how to fund the US Paypal account). In the end I had an issue when the US$25 ran out and Netflix couldn't access my US Paypal account. I called them and basically they could tell my connections to them for streaming were coming from Canada (I use Uno Telly who are based there) and they then started charging me a CAD$ subscription which is more expensive  They refused to fix it saying I was outside the USA. So I just closed this account. But when I opened it in October Netflix required a USA address.

When I opened the new account in December Netflix no longer required a USA address - just a zip code for state tax purposes. I tried to use my BNZ MasterCard and it would not accept it with some message about the address (on the card) not being recognized or matching the Zip code.

Now I know other posters are saying they have used a NZ card just fine. I think the critical thing is when did they sign up. If it was pre December then Netflix will just keep accepting their card until the expiry date and then they may have an issue updating a new NZ card.

If the other posters have registered with Netflix since December with a NZ card, then it must be something in particular with BNZ MasterCard.

That is why I say just give it a go and see what happens.

For those of you who are british ex-pats who maintain a UK bank account (or for thayt matter ex-pats of any other region netflix operates in - brazil, sweden, denmark etc), you can also sign up to that countries netflix using that currency and use the region switcher in unotelly or unblock-us to change to the US or other netflix regions as you like.
