Hi guys, I just got my Nokia N900. It is a very awsome phone. I have had a couple of issues with it that iv tried to solve. Firstly i use gmail alot and my account has 1000+ emails and so when i setup the email application on n900, it would use imap to download n sync everything and hence it becomes really slow. So I went to maemo.org and saw that email.nokia.com forwards a small number of emails to the phone. So i set it up and it was all good to go.

The second problem I have is that the OVI maps on this phone is completely useless. I have installed New Zealand maps on it but i dont know whether its using the internet to view map or the files i installed using OVI map loader. I have not managed to get a single GPS lock with or without internet.

Lastly I have only one internet connection setup VF NZ internet. Do i need to have any other connections?. My n82 had more than 1 connection.

Please help.

Officially announced by Sygic - they submitted their final version of their navigation app to Nokia last Thursday and are now awaiting approval.

I can't believe Nokia didn't capitalise on being the only player in the market by releasing a fully-functional version of Ovi Maps at release, now they stand to lose considerable market share in Maemo to Sygic...

I guess we'll have to wait and see whether Nokia plays fair and lets their product onto the market, or whether they stall to get theirs out first. Chance to see just how open Maemo really is???

Nokia just announced that the ovi maps is free for N97 Mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 navigator, 6730 classic and X6 but it doesnt include n900. This really sux.

"N900 owners shouldn't hold their breath, though, as Nokia is focusing on bringing its free navigation service to the next generation of Maemo devices. That's not to say that the N900 won't get it eventually, only that it's not currently on the roadmap." from engadget

Heh, just beat ya to it - I posted a thread on this announcement (I just came from the VIP Virtual Launch). Good news, but not that relevant here right?

I have managed to increase my battery life by over 100%
With my N900 I normally use it with 3G enabled only, no dual mode or 2G, so I only get the fastest data/internet speeds...
But I have found, 3G drains the battery...

So rather than having to go into the settings all the time and manually changing the phone connection setting, I installed the 2G/3G applet, which adds a quick option to change the phone connection setting in the status menu bar.....

Now, I use 3G only when I go online, and when at home tethered to my HTPC...
Otherwise when just using as phone, or at work on the seas, I use 2G mode....

This has over doubled my battery life.

WARNING!!!!!!

For those who shipped using Amazon, and signed up to trial Amazon Prime to get faster and cheaper shipping...
You have to manually CANCEL YOUR AMAZON PRIME MEMBERSHIP, otherwise Amazon will automatically charge you $69 US...just over $100 NZ for an annual subscription!

Cheeky...that was sneaky, musta been hidden in small print...

So check your bank statements...if you have already been charged, but have not used Amazon since, you can still get a full refund if you cancel the subscription now.

I got caught out...just cancelled...now waiting for refund.

That annoys me.

Are you giving the install process enough time?
My mate who I imported a N900 for had the same problem....turned out he was just exiting the install screen before the app was fjully installed, which caused the install to cancel.

Tried installing my ClearProtector screen protector a week ago and it didn't go very well - ended up getting some crap on the sticky side so ruined my first protector. Hope it goes well the second time. I steamed up the bathroom and did it in there as that settles all the dust. Wet your fingers with the solution too and that stops any crap getting on the protector. I used 1/4 teaspoon of dish liquid to 10oz water for the solution. My first attempt was not soapy enough so quickly made more solution and let the bubbles settle and it seemed to work fine. Most of the water I got out with a credit card and a cloth to absorb it before it ran down the side of the N900 into the speakers etc. Left it off over night. It looked fine right away but it really does get much better after a day or two as the tiny tiny bubbles just vanish.
