oxnsox: OK... soo lets say this isn't implemented thru Telcos here. What chance is there of this happening when you roam to the USA via either a SIM update or by inserting a local pre-pay SIM???? I'm not aware of any way that they could download software to your phone via. the SIM.

Seems to be only installed in US smartphones including iOS. The carriers can do some really funky stuff with OTA updates and baseband stuff. Can't say anything for sure other than it is possible to do

Apart from the obvious "it was not disclosed and I didn't opt in", how is this different from the telemetry data other companies collect, such as Microsoft that collects from their Windows users and Windows Phone users? They monitor everything, from which functions are being used, how many keys are being typed, where people click, etc. Obviously all non-identifiable, and used to decide where to improve features, etc...

I think this is the equivalent of having faulty airbags in Cadillacs. Really wont affect anyone outside of the US unless you import a Caddy.

Another thought what about kindles? They have cell in them and come form the US? Though they do have a much smaller use case and Amazon is already knowily in control or storing the majority of it anyway

It makes me think about all those people who bought imported (from the US) Android and iPhone devices to use here in New Zealand... Mind you I bet its confusing the hell out of the spooks in the US, " Nah, Yeah Bro, takin the Commodore loaded with p1ss up to the Naki"

It has been pointed out time and time again that it is not enabled by default in iOS and when it is enabled it sends much less information than the Android version, also you can opt out in iOS vs. in Android you can't.

And that something is opt-in, and not hidden, and Microsoft clearly keeps talking to people about all the telemetry data they collect. Nothing to see here, citizen.
