According to Tony Lentino, CEO of Mega, the new cloud storage service will bring immediate economic value to Australia and New Zealand in the form of new jobs as it grows the Mega venture.

You got to love this BS political talk.... what job's the website is not hosted in New Zealand the support is Australia seems like ALL the jobs and the "few" jobs that this will generate is in Australia :(

I would have liked to see this hosted in New Zealand but in reality Bandwidth is just too expensive here and this free site would require between 10 - 20gbit start-up bandwidth not taking into consideration growth.... that much bandwidth is not cheep in NZ.

freitasm: IIRC Google does not show ads in search results that could lead to pirated content because they don't want to be said to be profiting from digital piracy.

I've stopped torrenting since I discovered most of the stuff I want to torrent is actually available on YouTube, sometimes in HD, for free.

I would stop fully if netflix was available in NZ with the same content as in the US and available at the same time....

:( I can't upload files again.....

Chill. It's the biggest launch of it's type ever and we are on one thin line to the rest of the world. The backwater of the Internet, you could say, pioneers of living dangerously close to going to play outside.

If you join Mega in a month, it will be quicker as they will have bought the right fit of bandwidth, being closer to understanding the genuine usage trends, and they would have ironed out all the technical scaremongering that is being suggested by the thought of deduped invisible files etc.

I'm confident Mega will be much better in a few weeks in every way.

The servers are not hosted in New Zealand and the problems happen even if you use a VPN terminating your connection in another country.

It's not a New Zealand broadband problem. It's a scalability problem based on bad planning.

It may not be a NZ problem, but it is a problem for NZ only having one link for everybody to simultaeously demand a 2048bit key and upload 50GB then find a forum to crucify the service.

Nothing I've seen so far works like that, certainly not from here and moaning changes nothing. MF, you should know more than anybody here starting an online venture is no science.

Given the business model, virtual storage services must be harder to scale than gym premises.

I think I'll wait 4 weeks. By then, the tyre kickers would have left the yard and the service will be a bit more predictable and stable.

The problems with uploading is happening all around the world, not NZ only. How many pipes there's going out of NZ doesn't impact in the service performance, seeing it is a problem affecting users around the world, not only here.

They had MegaUpload before. They knew how much traffic this can generate. A little bit of scalability planning wouldn't hurt.

I hear you. But a million signups in a day = a million keygens in a day and potentially, a million dudes trying to upload 50GB simultaneously, per day.

We should have expected it to be larger than anything even Mega could plan for - that is how he lives and works.

This is trivial. I just used my Rapsberry Pi to generate 100 2048 bit keys, and it didn't take much time (and they don't take up much space).

and upload 50GB

Not a whole lot of data in the grand scheme of things, I remember the first few unlimited DSL weekends by a certain ISP, and they published massive data transfer figures with no big problems.

then find a forum to crucify the service.

What forum are you reading? They absolutely have not been crucified in this thread. The thread is very constructive, and raises valid and informed points about how its a bad look to simply be unable to provide any upload progress to multiple users in this thread.

I think I'll wait 4 weeks. By then, the tyre kickers would have left the yard and the service will be a bit more predictable and stable.

And the service will be less likely to survive or be a success, because along with the tyre kickers, will be people who could have become paying customers, who will go and trial other services, and when they find a working one that fits their needs, will get their wallet out, before Mega has been able to provide upload progress on a reliable basis.

I got my account activated immediately on launch day, but could only access the site through https - http://www.mega.co.nz always timed out.

I have tried (including leaving Chrome open for hours) to get upload progress, and haven't acheived any yet.
