ahmad: Is there any point in transfering to the PC then if there are few programs that can use the file - and how often is DRM/copy protection an issue?

Do you personally transfer and if so to what end do you do this?

Yes, I use the laptop to watch programs when I'm not at home or if I'm in a different room to the Tivo.  The DRM has never been an issue.  The picture quality has always been stunningly good.

The transfer speed sucks but in reality isn't an issue as I have a few series that I set up auto transfers on.

Thanks - do you just play that file in VLC or something? What kind of file is it - .tivo?

Does anyone have any experience converting this file into mp4 for iPad?

I use kmttg to get the programs off the TiVo.
It's a java based program and will convert the TiVo files at the same time so you can play them everywhere. It also shows the hard drive usage on your TiVo which is great.
Google kmttg and you will find it.
Btw. TiVo desktop won't work on my win 7 laptop which is why I found alternatives.

I was only joking about the googling.

I did a test convert of an episode of the Office recently to generic MP4 and played the file on my TV and the picture was very small and a bit fuzzy but i guess it would look ok on a small MP4 device. Took ages to convert also.

I am pretty sure I played the .tivo [proprietary format] in VLC and it was ok. The files are huge though, I think about 2GB for a 30 minute show.

DRM only effects shows that you have paid to download through CASPA and also anything you have transferred from your PC to the TiVo.

Setting up auto transfers is a better idea as it will transfer as soon as it is recorded so you might not realise you have it until it is already finished transferring.

Not sure what the .tivo file is closest to. you can actually use your web browser to access the tivo and download the shows in one of two formats. TS and ???PS was it? anyone help with that, both the same size though

It works on my Win 7 netbook but only intermittantly can I see my Netbook in the "Now Playing" list on the TiVo.
As an alternative I set up a folder on my Netbook and designated it as an auto-transfer folder, so that anything I drop in there gets transferred to the TiVo.  This works ok even when I can't see the PC via the Tivo Now Playing list. It is slow and resulting quality is not great though. Much better through the PS3.

Yeah, lts never worked for me right from the start. I can see the files on the TiVo with TiVo desktop but when I go to transfer them it says file not found. Works gone on xp and vista bit not win 7 for me. TiVo support told me to format my computer and reinstall. Not doing that just to get it going which is why I found other programs that work better and are free !

If you want to transfer files then use either pytivo or kmmtg.  I use pytivo.  On my Tivo's, my pc share shows up at the bottom of the now playing list.  I select the show to transfer and start watching within a minute.  The only quality issues I have are when the show is a poor quality download.  I generally try to get 720p MKV's and they play fine.  I use a wired connection rather than wireless.

Thanks for all the useful answers.

Another question to add to the mix - why is there no EPG for Prime and Maori (and are these the only 2 affected channels)?

Are these plans for these channels to be included in the EPG or is it never going to happen?

Is there anyway of getting around not purchasing the MAK? It appears in the US, that it is included free with teh tivo, and the documentation on the tivo NZ website implies that it is included, and it doesn't actually say that it must be purchased separately. However if you go to the tivo shop, it is listed as an item to be purchased.  It is just that it's price is comparatively high, compared to the fact that the tivo itself is just $360. I would almost prefer just to buy another tivo. I am hoping they are going to drop the price on the ke. It is not something I really need, but it would be handy to watch the programs on my netbook.

Prime at least won't allow them access. They blame the fact that they can't monitor viewership numbers on the tivo.

Maori TV should be on it, as it is taxpayer owned, but they seem to be able to make their own rules, so I am not sure why they are missing.

I had to google what MAK was and have just hit a snag - so in order to copy stuff OFF the TiVO to a computer, I need to buy a key for $129??

Is that right? Any way around it?

No, sorry. Without the code the TiVo won't let you take anything.

IMHO, seriously not worth it. You would be better off downloading anything you wanted to watch on a mobile device from a share site sans ads.

So how come you have it? I presume you were an early adopter and got one when it still came bundled? From my limited research I believe it was bundled in the past.
