So I bought a TIVO not realising I needed an internet connection to get channel data.

Bugger.

Luckily for my iphone4, I was able to tether to my laptop, turn my laptop into a wireless hotspot in windows 7 and update it that way.  Sometimes.

Then iphone 4 update came out for hotspot.  That works too.  Sometimes.

Every 10 days or so I tru to update my Tivo, and sofar it has worked eventually, but it takes about an hour of fiddling each time, for it to say either 'no network adaptor' 'failed while negotiating' etc.

Can anyone tell me a reliable way to set up a Tivo once a week to get new channel updates from my iphone 4 hotspot (vodafone)?

I have managed to get it to work on about 6 different occasions so far, using both my computer as hotspot and iphone as hotspot.  No internet at home, so thats not an option.

Cheers in advance for th help.

What APN do you use? Have you tried using the direct APN to see if that makes any difference?

Not sure sorry.

I went into network, chose the wifi network from the list (either iPhone or laptop) then generally used the bottom option which was to key the media device choose it's own ip address.

The APN settings are in your phone.

just an update, have just updated my Tivo Channel list. Connected to my phone hotspot, using a password on the hotspot, the Tivo connected, started negotiating and failed when negotiating about 60% of the time.

Then about 35% of the time it negotiated fine, then at the downloading stage the 'connection was inturrupted'.

Then in the end it finally worked (after about 25 tries) and downloaded very quickly, worked a treat.

It is just such a pain having to spend 30 mins every two weeks updating the channels. Anyone else had a problem? is it a problem (do you think) with Vodafone? my iphone? my tivo? me?

Cheers

Have you tried connecting your TiVo to your laptop via ethernet and using Internet Connection Sharing (not sure how to do this in Windows off the top of my head) to share your iPhone's connection over ethernet?
