Just wondering if anyone is using one of these with a TiVo and if so what are your thoughts?

Can't comment on the remote extender, but if you have an iPod/iPad/iPhone there are some remote control apps that work with the tivo and would work if you have a wifi connection.  I've tried one called "Peanut Remote" and it works pretty well.

Cool, I use iphone\ipad to control my apple tv 2 and logitech squeezbox so it would be pretty cool to have everything controlled the same way.

Did peanut remote require any special setup to work with an NZ TiVo?

No, the only thing you need to do is to enable 'allow network remote' or something like that which you will find under the remote control menu option.

Cool, I'll give it a shot tonight. Only need the remote in the other room while I watch the news each night so iPhone accessshould be fine.

I've used DRV Remote for my Tivo on my iPhone http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dvr-remote/id301759016?mt=8. I'd go so far as to give it a 5 star rating and well worth the $2.99.
