Hi - We have created a couple of adobe pdf forms for use at work. They work fine .... UNTIL mac users start using them.
It seems that OSX has its own inbuilt pdf renderer (crystal or something) that will open a pdf form and let someone fill it out - but if you send it back to a windows PC user who uses proper adobe reader the form fields look blank, unless you click in each field - then the users data 'sometimes' appears. Often it looks like they are returning a blank pdf form.

I gather the issue is the inbuilt crystal pdf part of OSX uses a subset of the pdf standards so is not compatible with adobe pdf readers

This is driving me nuts!

I suspect that if the mac users installed the adobe pdf product and used that all would be well - but I suspect most of them just click on the pdf file and start bashing away - it looks ok to them so they think all is well.

1) Does anyone else have this issue?
2) Anyone know anyway of making sure that the file can only be opened with adobe reader on a mac and not the inbuilt renderer?
3) Any other suggestions of a way of having a user fillable form that is compaible over the windows/mac platforms?

You pretty much describe the issues we have with PDF forms and users on the Mac.

The default Mac PDF Preview application is a preview application and PDF forms created for use in the Adobe Reader don't always works as expected. If the PDF has JavaScript e,g, for calculations then the scripting is just ignored.

If we ever get a call to say our forms don't work then the first question is - "Are you on a Mac?"

Re your 3 points :

1. Yes we get the issue
2. Obviously the user has to install the Adobe Reader. Once installed if the user selects a PDF document they can right click or bring up the Get Info dialog (short cut - cmd + i) they can then set the default application for PDF documents so that they always open in Adobe Reader. Next time they double click they should be sorted.
3. Even with this issue on Mac we stick with PDF - it has too many advantages to look for something else.

tosuch
