Hey all, I'm looking into getting some photoshop training for my wife for her birthday. She's developed an interest in photography and we've already got a reasonable camera (and a baby to take photos of), it's just the post-prod skills she's lacking in. Does anyone have any suggestions on any suitable photoshop courses (either night or weekend) in auckland centralish?

Youtube. Maybe a class to get the basics but lots of free learning online.

Yeah there's lots of free stuff online, but it would be good to have a base understanding of how to drive it first though.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I know Wintec in Hamilton has Photoshop listed under short courses which you attend I think once or twice a week in the evenings. Only costs $280. Have a look at the courses offered at your local polytechnic in your area.

Scott Kelby books, Linda or Kelby training online.

Post processing is good, but honestly most professionals get it pretty close to right in camera then just tweak in Lightroom or camera raw. Honestly, unless you like silly effects, you're better off spending more time learning about how to take the photo right than how to process it. Post processing is very time consuming, and a busy Mum won't have that time.

Lightroom or Bridge (Bridge comes with Photoshop) is all that 99% of my photos see.

+1

Timmay bet me to it.  Honestly look into Lightroom as you can spend a lot of time learning photoshop but in a lot of cases it's not what you actually want to 'perfect' your photo.

Yup we've seen quite a few kelby videos etc on taking the shots so she's got a reasonable base with that, it's just the fine tuning in post she's a bit light with. Not really after the crazy tweaks or silly effects so much, more so the finishing touches to change it from a good photo to a great photo. I'm not after much, just something that's good enough to show her around the application(s if more than one's involved) and some basics so she's confident enough to do what she needs to and learn the rest herself.

We've trialing lightroom as a management tool already, you're right it's great for editing photos. Perhaps I could look at something that includes them both.

What turns an image from good to great are often emotion and lighting. If you can post an example of what she's doing in Photoshop before and after maybe we can help more generally.

Natcoll in Auckland (corner Symonds St and Karangahape Rd, CBD) runs short courses in evenings and weekends and can even provide one on one tutoring. I studied there and the teachers are awesome, fantastic for beginners. Way better than trying to muddle your way through online tutorials where if you get stuck there's no one to ask. Good luck!

Picasa 2 or digikam is two good free alternatives for the initial post production

GIMP if you want to go further

but yeah, like the said better off putting the effort into getting the shot right first :)

Would be great to hear how you got along with this. I am an avid photographer, and I can get a half decent shot everynow and again, but most of the time I end up messing things post-production, so a course sounds like just what the doctor ordered.
