For Xmas I bought my parents a Panasonic DMR-XW390 Freeview DVD recorder.  I am trying to connect my fathers DV camera (NVGS300) but found the camera store stills on a SD card and Video on a tape.  There is a DV connector or the camera - presumable firewire, but on the player/recorder there is only USB and an SD card reader.

I have been reading about DV to USB but it seems it does not work.

My father has a older DVD recorder that has a DV input and you could transfer video with that... but this one was a replacement for the digital age.

Has anyone come across this issue?

The DV connector (FireWire) is basically a legacy connection these days. Which is what is causing you all your grief.

Those cameras were basically recording in SD PAL, so you can happily connect it to you new PVC via the analog ports, sure it means that dubbing must be in real time, but given that these things use tape, I am not sure how much faster the DV link might have been.......
