I am furious with myself - as I'm am unsure what I've done...

I've been backing up images to cds/dvds and i've decided now to move to an external HDD - so I transferred everything to an external HDD - and everything on the external has been working great - until now...and I can't work out why because I've done nothing different??  but I will say its the first time I've loaded this HDD on this mac since updating to the new OS (Mavericks) but i highly doubt that would do this...

Half the images on the hdd are saying they're corrupt and won't open (on a mac) or "this windows viewer not able to open this" (on windows)...

and just to compound my frustrations - the CDs won't LOAD!!!! no matter how many computers I try them on?!?!?!?!?!

I did manage to get 1 to load but nothing else will load but it shows photos as a containerx file - i'm believing its creative memories software as my partner did use this software and we don't have it anymore and they've gone bust so I'm very very outta luck with these ones unless theres some method???

What strikes me odd is - every jpeg file shows that it has something in it - 3-4mb per file as they were high quality images - but i just can't open them!!!! as it seems like they're there??

My partner is about to MURDER me - so i need to do something to get a stay of execution so I can enjoy christmas....

I have access to a Mac and Windows so anything that I can use on either computer would be appreciated...

Much appreciate your assistance please :)

Doesn't sound good. Do you have a backup of the HD? CDs aren't really a backup, as many recordable CDs will fail after a few years unless they are special archive ones and or/are stored in the dark.

no backup of the hdd as i do those monthly and its not that time of month yet might have to do weekly backups now...- the hdd is brand new only 2-3 weeks old - and its been dedicated to photos - what confuses me is that some work fine, some don't? yet they were all transferred at the same time - and when I loaded the hdd to make sure they all work - the entire folder had a preview image - and i could see every image had a preview yet now half of them don't have previews....  the images were only transferred to the hdd from cd at the start of month...

the DVD/CDs was created last year and stored in a dark shoebox with a whole lot of negatives from the pre digital days which was another reason why i was pissed off as i thought this dvd and cd would be fine (its quite funny though as I've just started scanning negatives and am having no trouble recovering images taken 40odd years ago???? yet in the digital era i'm stuffed lol)

Hard drives need to be tested before they're used for backups.

Keep trying the CDs in as many computers as you can, especially the one that wrote it. One may be able to read it.

I'll keep that in mind for next time - the testing -

Is there any way at all to force these images to open?

as they're showing up as

xxx.jpg  3.2mb
xxx.jpg  1.2mb
xxx.jpeg 4.2mb

xxx = the name of image

so its like they're there - but unable to be opened - if it was showing as 0kb or 0mb i know i'm royally screwed but since the sizes are there I'm holding on to some hope and miracle....

can't see anything I can change - as a couple I looked at match the ones that can open (apart from size etc obviously) but in terms of read/write etc they all match - so in theory they should open right?

Hi - sorry to hear of your woes.

I remember reading of some people having ext drive issues with Mavericks, so this sounded an alarm bell, but it could be worth doing some research on that side of the equation. Here's one thread on Apple's discussions
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23493143#23493143

Good luck.

Cheers,
Mike

Can you try opening the images with a different viewer? Photoshop, Irfanview, or an online service? Can you view the files with a text/hex editor?

No idea on a mac sorry. Google it perhaps?

If none of those can read it then it's likely corrupt, sorry. Upload a file to dropbox and share a link and I'll try Photoshop CS6, alternately upload to yousendit.com or PM me for my email address.

Irfanview claims the first one is a pcd file (but it's no good when it opens), the other two it says it can't read the header...
It's fair to say it's not looking flash.

I'd start thinking of things like:

Did I keep them somewhere else for a bit (laptop, ipad, etc), and are they still there.
Did I email any to someone, is it therefore still in my sent items or their inbox.
Did I upload some to ____.
Did they get included in some other backup. Apple Time machine backups perhaps.
Does ____ still have the ones they took.

Did you take these pics with a Kodak by any chance, like the person says above, the first one is coming up as a PCD
