Hey everyone,

So heres what i need:

A customer of mine needs to be able to take a photo of a car part and have it sent to a folder on their server or a dedicated folder or something, obviously the easier the better.

So maybe if someone knows of a low/mid range camera that can take a photo and then maybe instead of saving it to a memory card it could save it directly to the server through the WIFI network or something along those lines.

Thanks !

P.s. also it does not need to be renamed or anything, just simply copied to the server automatically

Would a wifi SD card such as this be of any use?

I've not used one myself but have seen them reviewed around the place not unfavorably.

Hi - it does sound like the eyefi card would work for you. I've used the first gen card and it does work, but can be a little erratic at times. I believe the newer cards ('x2' version) are faster & a little more robust.
There needs to be a pretty good wifi signal where the camera is being used, but then it should indeed work as your client requires.

Cheers,
Mike

Ive been trying to find one that will ship to NZ for ages, ebay sellers that list a shipping price mysteriously change their mind after you have bought it

how good does the photo need to be? Why not use a camera on a phone and upload it that way?

Hi - for anyone interested, I bought an EyeFi card from B&H Photo Video in NY, a few years ago. I noticed a local 'one day special' type list that had EyeFi cards for sale - but they were the earlier gen card, so probably not what you'd want.

I can vouch for B&H or Adorama as being very good for shipping to NZ so would happily buy from them again. If they have Eye-Fi cards they'd be where i'd buy them from if Ebay doesn't put out.

They dont have to be good quality but if its done on a phone it still needs to be manually uploaded it really needs to be automatic, its so they can identify returned parts to make sure they were theirs and not a customer sending back their own to try and get a credit... happens allot apparently, i suggested maybe using a UV Pen and just having a UV light in their dispatch

Good luck with that. xD is a dead format last I checked, right up there with smart media for obsolescence.

There are some cameras that use a bodgejob of a micro SD to xD holder to use a card that you can get still, you might be able to depending on how things line up use that adapter, and then a micro to full SD adapter and have the card card hanging out of the camera. I used to have a micro to full SD adapter so I could put the cameras memory card onto the phone to upload stuff from it, but then decent size microSD became affordable so I think I have lost the adapter. Deal extreme is where it came from anyway.

The xD to microSD adapters will not work in all cameras, they are just an electrical adapter, no smarts in it so the camera needs to speak SD.

Hi All,

I am after a still camera that would automatically save the photo to a file on our server (as the OP suggested) I got a Samsung DV300 today to use but it was rejected by my boss as it wasn't easy enough as the user had to do too much to e-mail the photos thru to a file/in box.

Our other option is to get an Iphone/Android phone and use that to send the photos thru, again to an e-mail address, this option is a little easier but still not quick enough, the fact is that the people who are to use this will simple take the photo's and give the camera to someone once a week to upload, the same as currently happens, by this time no one can remember which jobs to upload the photos to!

So the idea scenario is that you take a photo, which is instantly saved to a file on our server, or directly to an e-mail address ready to be loaded to the job.

The budget is up to $900 otherwise we will likely get an Iphone and use that.

I know a little more than nothing but not much...

To add to the last poster, why not a cheapish android phone (A300 is good price and quality) setup a gmail account and add Google Drive to your PC, add Google Drive app to phone, take photo, hit share button, select google drive, moments latter (via WiFi) photo is in Google Drive on PC.

I am have an eye-fi and it is a magic little device. The only issue with it is that you need to be pretty close to the access point.
The issue about getting them here is a biggie.
An android with instant upload might be the go.

Cheers.
