dman: There is now another Chromebook for only US$199:

Yeah, careful with that though.  Read some reviews and check out the spec.  It's considerably less of a machine than the Samsung one.
  • thicker
  • heavier
  • Intel celeron processor
  • regular HDD not SSD
It's a race to the bottom - I'd rather spill the USD$50 for a much better box.

^ The Intel Celeron is actually a plus. However saving yourself $70~ isn't worth it considering all the other cons, including slower boot times and noticeably lesser battery life

Yeah, I'd pick the Samsung too (although the Celeron would probably have a small edge over it in performance) but if price is really important to you (say you're just giving it to the kids, thus then breakage is a real risk....) then this is a worthy consideration to consider.

The two things that attract me to the samsung are:

1. 10 second bootup time as opposed to 20 secs with Acer
2. 6.5 hours battery life over 3.5 in Acer

ok 3 things

3. No fan and SSD on SAmsung

I have one on backorder from Amazon hope it becomes available soon!!

My backordered Samsung chromebook ordered on the 5th of November was updated overnight with an arrival date of 19/20 November at my USA address.

I got a free update to 1 day shipping from standard shipping a few days ago after emailing Amazon to ask about the delay and a timeframe. They couldn't give me any timeframe but to apologise for the delay they upgraded it.

May be worth a shot if you're waiting for yours from Amazon and want it a few days quicker than standard shipping.

Well just got email from Amazon saying that the expected date of arrival is 19th to the 24th
So looking forward to getting this.

I assume the dates given would be the expected dates that they will arrive at the USA address?

I still got super saver free postage but with liner delivery time

GO AMAZON!

Well, Amazon say my Chromebook arrived at Youshop yesterday but I have had no email from Youshop as yet.  I guess that is because of it being the weekend.

My only concern now (after reading other posts) is the Lithium Ion battery.  Youshop have a page of prohibited items and Lithium Ion batteries are listed.  There have been some updates to this so am holding my breath now to see if it will get through or not.  Will know for sure early this week.

I will post an update with a price etc

One of my friends had an item through youshop recently. She had a similar thing happen. She got an email notification that the item had arrived at youshop USA and then nothing.

Three days later she got three emails in an hour. One leaving the states, one arriving in Auckland and one that it had cleared customs. There was some sort of disconnect with the status emails.

Cheers, Matt

I got an email on Wednesday that my item had left youshops warehouse for New Zealand and that I would get another email when it arrives in Auckland which it has not yet.

I had no trouble sending it out and no queries were raised about the batteries. Postage from youshop to NZ was around $65 NZD after discount kiwibank10 , this also includes $6 insurance.

Will update when it arrives with me, hopefully this week!

Can  I ask what your item was?  And were the Lithium Ion batteries?

Thanks, I would be very keen to hear how the Youshop experience was for you etc.

It was a Silhouette cameo die cutting machine which is very cool but doesn't contain lithium batteries. The Youshop thing went well but the die cutter was needed for a presentation and it was a bit concerning that it hadn't left the States. It appears that the departure scan was not entered out of the States until the cutter arrived in NZ. Otherwise it was a good experience.

Cheers, Matt.

It was a chromebook from amazon including stock batteries. It said on the youshop website that they open outter shipping boxes to check the items are not prohibited and to get a customs description. So if mine went straight through I can't see yours having any issues! (hopefully!)
