LennonNZ: I think http://www.tardme.co.nz is much better...

I think the best part is the "please shut it down" email containing spelling and grammatical errors.

Awesome

That tardme.co.nz site has been around for years. When I joined TM in early '06 it was old news. Nigel (who wrote the email you can see if you click the image) was long gone by that stage.

I can't tell you how little I like that idea. Worst idea ever. Facebook is Satans tools!

You would be in the minority based on what I have seen.

People are all too happy to fork over all sorts of access to random sites and apps just to avoid another password.

BraaiGuy: I remember when I first arrived in NZ and used trademe for the first time. My first impression was hmmmm Identical to www.bidorbuy.co.za, a local south african auction site.

That's because one of the Trade Me guys worked on the ZA site. More likely the ZA site was similar to the NZ site than the other way around.

bidorbuy is way better than trademe. Always has been. when i joined trademe it was like going back in time. To this day trademe has always looked dated. Thats the reason for their recent long overdue makeover.

Should the user database be purged and people asked to register?

From a privacy point of view there's currently now way to change account, no way to remove your information on request and no way to access your information.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. Just saying a person I know, from Wellington, was involved with both the South African and the Indian versions of bidorbuy... And that was after Trade Me.

No, it shouldnt be.

There never was a way to do those things in any case. Well you may have been able to access it but certainly not remove it

They would need to do it manually as they still have an email address.

I just wonder what happens with the competition they were running for signing up. No details about that.

Surely this has killed the chance of any eventual success? Has a both a terrible name in both senses.

How can we be sure?
I'm damned certain I would have loved to try a few of my tricks on it, but it was a "production" system.

I don't know. I believe that if they come back and the issues are resolved people will still give them another go. I am happy to give my money to the NZ owned company who is looking to provide a little competition to the market. People make mistakes, it happens. Yes choice of name was poor.
