Hi,

I am part of a new web start up and we want to hire locally. We are contemplating using one of the local Web orgs, but find them a tad too over priced. Can someone point me in the right direction?

We are considering eastern Europe where prices are competitive, but you can't beat face to face communication.

Pricing is relative. NZ developers maybe more expensive than from india or eastern europe, but will be cheaper than if you hire from the US or the UK. It is all relative to how much you earn yourself.

Thanks for the reply; I have found many US/UK firms can be cheaper than NZ. Sorry but who is cheaper is not the discussion I wish to have.

I should have said Wellington based Freelancers.

It will be difficult to point you in exactly the right direction without knowing the kind of features you require.

Cost though is obviously the determining factor. But using someone local you can meet and discuss can be worth a lot in my opinion. You don't want you end up with something that is insecure and poorly written, and you do't have future support for it. I have had personally experience with that myself when using an overseas developer, mainly due to communication issues, and it had to be redone locally.About 3 times the price using a local dev, but it was worth it for far less stress. NOt sure of any in Wellington though who are free to do work, but I am sure there are a few on here.
You could also look at doing shares in the idea instead of payment, if a developer liked your idea and wanted to become part of it.

Just look at Wheedle or whatever it's called...

We are looking at the share options as well, I can't say who we are looking to work with right now but the company is looking at a similar approach. I feel that we need to look at alternatives before we hop into bed..
