Over this last week a good friend and I soft-launched our www.knomee.co.nz website. This site is for kiwis that need to buy or sell any odd job, product or service. It is more of a make and offer, barter/negotiate type model site than a auction site.

We built the site to allow those with money and no time to outsource their odd jobs to those who have time but need some extra money. And also for small businesses to sell service coupons (Grabone etc don't take on small business coupons as they want volume), and also for those who have product that they want to sell to have a unique 'make an offer' platform to be able to do so (one mans junk is another mans treasure). The Buy Now feature is also available.

There are no commission fees or success fees! We do charge minimal listing fees; 40c for 15days, 70c for 30days and 90c for 45days. Every user receives $7 knomee credit upon registration.

This site has been in the making over the past 2years and over the last 6months has been full steam ahead with development. The site was developed here locally in Hamilton on our Kiwi CMS platform SilverStripe and hosted on a local cloud, and designed by my business partner.

Question I would like to pose to all geekzone members is:
If in our shoes, how would you generate traffic or make our site go viral with very limited marketing budget?
(We are just 2 local kiwi boys giving it a shot and don't have hundreds of thousands or millions for marketing to get this off the ground)

One possible way to do it is to incentivise referrals - let your "ground floor" members be your marketing. Second, I'm not seeing social sharing buttons on your listing pages - you go to a Trademe page and there's "email a friend", Facebook and Twitter buttons. You've got none of those so there's no easy way for people to share interesting listings on your site.

I'll probably come up with some more later, but there's just a couple to start you thinking.

Thanks for your response. In every listing up the top right hand corner of the page we have facebook integration features where people can like the listing to their facebook page or send it via facebook message. At the bottom of each page their is an email a friend function but I guess we need to make that more accessible like the facebook icons are.

Constructive criticism:
Having the product/service image on the bottom right, which forces people to scroll down (some probably won't even get that far) seems a little bit of a weird design/layout choice. Wouldn't it be better higher up the page so it's 'in-yo-face' from the start?

Interesting site.

I think it is worth you considering your sales pitch some more. Going to your site, I wanted to know what it was about and there was a video I couldn't be bothered watching so I gave up. There was none of the pitch you have made above written anywhere.

Maybe some customer stories describing the problem knomee has solved would be good (I assume that is what the video is...) but not cheesy testimonials.

I browsed a massive number of thumbnails and accidently realised that they give a summary of the odd jobs.

I think the design is nice in some ways and looks cheap in others, not sure I can put my finger on it. Might be the multiple font choices? Or the vertical grey stripes. It kinda looks visaully flat, there appears to be no dimensionality with drop shadows etc.

Interesting how your layout differs from Trademe, there may be some lessons to learn there around whitespace management of lists etc.

You mean pay for referrals using an affiliate system? There are tax implications with that aren't there?

Nice job, really well thought out and easy to use. That will take off with very little effort.

A few notes:

After setting a region - the region is not displayed to the user. The text 'Change region' remains in the combo. Suggest display of the region in the combo after user selection.

Look at Twitter/Facebook integration to allow easy tweet and/or facebook post from the listing form or user options:

"Looking for someone to mow my lawn this weekend: [link to knowme listing]".

You could consider offering users x number of free or discounted listings on this basis and remove the $7 credit or figure out some other way to balance it or not depending on your goals.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, we are currently working on enhancements as budget allows. Keep it coming. Anyone know of any ways, ideas, stunts that really pull peoples attention in other than social media integration?
