Easy really. Just convince Kim Dotcom to start it. Cool

I can picture it now: It'll promise awesome features, super low fees, make it really easy to sign up and create auctions.... then anyone who wants to actually y'know bid will have to sit there for hours or days on end retrying over and over again before making a successful bid. :P

Contact Ebay and ask them if they have any ideas that could help you.

The thread should be about " How to create a online auction brand to take on trademe "

It's the Trademe brand that is very powerful

Any new auction site needs massive incentives for buyers and sellers for a long period of time in order to build a large enough audience.. and of course constant promotion/advertising in order to become a household name.

Kim taking a shot at online auctions isn't the worst idea I've heard, he has the publicity.

Don't put plain text passwords in cookies, that would be a good start

sella.co.nz is pretty good.

My parents sold their car on Sella for free - would have cost at least $30 on trademe - got what they wanted too.

Sella currently have 43,019 in their Motoring category, TradeMe has 57,364. Not too far off in that respect!

My advice is to always list on Sella first....

Sella is full of dealer listings tho....  I tried selling my mothers car there for a few months, had zilch interest at all. On TM, had some calls about it at least.... still didnt sell tho.

APN need to advertise Sella and toss out the dealers :-p

Why doesn't some start a wanted site? I mean, everyone is trying to start a second shop here. Surely there is a market for people who want something?

My partner suggested this just last night for property.

She thinks we'd be better off with a listing saying:

Our budget is $a,bcd,efg
Our requirements are:
# of bedrooms
# of bathrooms
Floor area min
Land area min
Title types
etc etc

That is exactly what someone I was talking to recently wondered, why there isn't such a website.

I know right? Could be for anything, rare spare parts, rentals, cars anything. I guess how you would make any money would be the problem.

I would love to start up an auction website, I think it would be great giving Trademe a real competitor, plus I have some ideas that I think would make a way better auction platform than TM's stagnant website. Unfortunately the chances of failing are too high.  I have just started a small online business which has made me realise what a massive job it would be to compete with TM.  If you could get together the perfect team, someone with money, someone with PR pull and some super geeks then maybe it could work.
