gingerman93: Gareth, do you have any softsoil areas around your house?

If you have structured wiring around your house that goes to the garage, you should really look to try to get the ONT located there. It's so much easier to switch your structured cabling around to get the fibre broadband to another location in the house - future proofing and all that - rather than being stuck at the jackpoint behind the TV for the next few decades.

If there's softsoil around the house to the garage, Chorus may do civil-work for you and get the fibre located to the garage instead.


Not sure if soft soil or not, we're basically a few meters above sea level down by a mangrove swamp.

Also got not phone services or adsl sync today, and im assuming its because the workmen are out on the street laying the fiber, as im posting this they already have the large roll starting to be unraveled.  Got my phone tethered instead, full reception here on xt.

Perhaps they could run the fibre cable to the front of the house externally then run internally to the garage?

Do you have softsoil areas on your private ground? By this I mean is it entirely tarmac/concrete, or are there patches or strips of grassed or soil ground on your property? Chorus should be able to work much easier and with less disruption to your property if they can trench through soft-soil rather than having to cut concrete etc

Gustov....thanks very much for taking the time to post this with the photos...I dont think we will get this here in Tuakau but I have lodged a request with Worldnet to see if its possible soon as Chorus are apparently doing something related to the UFB here by June 2013..

The speeds you are getting would make our SmartTv run really great etc... plus being able to upload YouTube videos in minutes not hours would be brilliant!!....my current Compass Wireless connection isn't fast enough...

Little off topic here; but would you recommend WorldNet as an ISP, gustov, or would anyone else here like to recommend an ISP? I originally came here to get a better understanding of the UFB upgrade process, and from reading through the thread it seems WorldNet were more than easy to deal with throughout the process. I am currently looking to change ISPs, and my area in Hamilton will be available for UFB by the end of the year, so a company who can help us through this transition is definitely something I will be looking for.

Thanks for the thread though. It was very informative and helpful. I had no idea there were so many steps involved, but I'm glad you have helped clear a few of these up.

Worldnet are not that well known outside New Zealand's Chinese community. I've seen a few adverts on prime time TV recently, so assume they're starting to target outside their traditional target market. They were one of the first ISPs off the rank when UFB was launched by Chorus and Enable and those other guys. I've seen a few writeups about them on Computerworld and they seem to be decent enough, certainly haven't heard anything bad about them ... which is more than I can say for some of the more household names.

Hi Frisken, I apologise for the delay in answering your question. I am subscribed to the thread by e-mail, but must have missed your question arriving in my e-mail inbox.

Yes, I have no hesitation in recommending Worldnet. Before the UFB install I was already a longstanding ADSL customer with them, I think about six years, and I never had any issues with my DSL connection. (Incidentally, my UFB IP address is the same today, as it was when I had the fibre installed two months ago. Some people pay big money for a static IP address!).

When I last checked a couple of months ago (so it may have changed now) there were only three ISP's in Auckland (yes I see you are in Hamilton) that offered UFB - Orcon. Vodafone and Worldnet, and indeed I think Worldnet were the first to release UFB pricing plans, so they have set the pricing benchmark, so to speak. So in Auckland, potential UFB customers only have a choice of three ISP's anyway. Maybe it is wider now, and maybe the choice differs in Hamilton. Perhaps others can comment.

All Worldnet's internet, phone and toll call prices have been competitive which is one of the two reasons I chose them in 2006. The other reason (and this is not so relevant to you in Hamilton but still worth my mentioning) is their office is located only 2 km's away from me, and I liked the idea of being able to visit them if I ever had any problems. If you have an internet problem with Telecom or Vodafone I think you have to travel to Manila to meet your support person.

And when I have visited them, their front door is open and you walk right in and meet someone who themselves can actually attend to your questions. There is no receptionist - the combined sales and routine IT support people work in reception and you can even look on their screens at your own account and see all sorts of interesting technical information about your own specific internet connection. So there is a really nice casual helpful attitude prevailing in the office. For example years ago a friend gave me a Thomson wireless modem that was locked into another ISP and I could not configure it for Worldnet (this was my first wireless router). I took it into Worldnet at about 6pm in the evening and they set it up for me in 10  minutes, no charge, no fuss.

So as you can see. I am very happy to recommend Worldnet. If their service is in your city then by all means give consideration to signing up with them. Oh, one last thing, with Worldnet's UFB telpehone service included in the deal we only pay 9.5 cents per minute for cell phone calls (previously 27 p/minute with Telecom) and that has seen a noteworthy decrease in our monthly toll bill.

Gingerman93 - I think you have succinctly summarised Worldnet's position. They undoubtedly have many Chinese (and Korean) customers - all the staff I have met when visiting their office are at least bilingual, with English being their second language

With Auckland having such a large Asian community this leaves them well-placed to capture that ethnic market without the "baggage' that a Vodafone or Orcon ISP might carry. People do like it when they can speak to someone in their own language. Mine's English, and they are good at that too!

a friend of mine is with kci.net.nz for adsl, i emailed them about fiber, as i'll be moving to fiber very shortly once work in the street is completed.

heres what I got from them:
Thank you for your inquiry, however PlaNet cannot match Orcon's free offer, what we will offer is a flatrate 100/50 Fibre-optic at the 30/10Mbps price of $139/month inc GST.

Im assuming kci and planet are the same company.

Thanks for offering to let Worldnet know of my recommendation, however, there's no need. They know me quite well now. They asked to put my original review on their website, and it sits there now, although you have to search for it.
