Hi guys,
My UFB is scheduled for the 7th September, I'm very lucky with Churton Park fiber access was completed a while back now.
I currently have VDSL and have my router connected to a phone jack on the second floor study of my house.
I would prefer my UFB equipment installed in a closet I have in my study. Do you think Chorus would do that or would they go with the easiest install possible? I am happy to pay extra as I imagine it could be quite a bit of work to route the cables to the second floor.

Then I was looking to get an existing jack point on the lower floor converted to a network jack for my TV to utilize. Since chorus would need to run a cable up stairs I was thinking it would be easier to piggy back with that.

Do you think the Chorus install team would be willing to do the extra work? I have asked my ISP (Snap) to pass on my request, I have yet to hear a response as yet though. I imagine a site survey would need to completed regardless anyway?

Will

Custom home networking installs are a supported scenario and on the Chorus pricelists for RSP's. It's a POA process however depending on the work required.

It may be better to get various quotes from other data cablers/electricians even. How old is the house?

Zeon: It may be better to get various quotes from other data cablers/electricians even. How old is the house?

My house was built in 1970, and apparently is quite difficult to run cables, coming from the electrcian I asked to quote to put a light on a side porch but thats another story.
Does chorus do a site survey before the install or kinda make it up on the day? Each install would be totally different from the next so I assume they need to have a quick look first?

Seems like they mostly do a prelim survey. I am due to get my installation next Tues 28th but two Chorus vans turned up yesterday (Fri) to ask if they could get an early start in case there were problems! So, away they went and got the internal run of the fibre completed and checked the external track from the pillar to the house.

This stuff is all quite new to these guys in the Wellington area. They said I was the 9th connection in the whole area! Wow, in the top ten.

Getting a bit concerned about the Genius modem not turning up, though. Was supposed to be here last Thurs or Fri. If it doesn't arrive RSN we will be in the crap.

Good luck with your installation.

We do offer a wide range of wiring add-on services for while our tech is on-site, but you'll need to talk to your RSP as we do not sell directly to local residents, the order needs to come from your RSP.

You are right that every installation is different when we turn up. That's why we talk to the resident about all of our installation requirements and get the resident to agree before work is undertaken.

Very informative thanks ChorusVan, Ultra Fast Fibre is doing it here in Cambridge, but will they be doing the installs to the house or will you guys? I emailed UFF and they have never replied, so its good to know these things.

UFF will manage their own build and connection process in the areas where they are deploying the new UFB network.

Hi Will, perhaps you can check whether cable to 2nd floor study is "Category 5e" and decide whether to use that as a network link with RJ45 outlets at each end, so you could plug the upstairs outlet to an ethernet switch in your study connected to the router/gateway downstairs. 100mbps ethernet usually just needs the orange and green pairs on the outlet, as long as the same wires go to the same colours at each end of the cable.

I talked to my ISP (Snap) about getting Chorus to look at the additional work. I got this reply this morning...

Hi Will,

Thanks for your recent inquiry regarding Ethernet cabling for your new NGA connection.
Apologies for a our delayed response, we have been awaiting clarification from Chorus.

A specialist at Chorus has advised that this type of wiring is something they may be interested in doing in the future, however currently they have no product to complete this type of work.

You will need to arrange a contractor to complete this work if required unfortunately.

Thanks,

That doesn't seem right, does it?

Just get someone else to do it TBH. The attitude of Chorus to internal wiring is uuhhh - very questionable in my experience. You want a good job.

Sorry - we didn't realise you were after a structured cabling solution with home distribution cabinet etc. While we are looking to deliver a service like this, it's still some time away from being ready.

Our focus is connecting UFB services and installing the ONT in the most accessible location. This can require additional cabling in the home which our team are trained to deliver, but a full home rewire is beyond what we're able to do at this point in time.

Yeah I agree with ChorusVan here...they are really only getting the fibre to the premises. What happens for your own network in the house is for you to sort out with a data cabling company... personally I wouldn't expect Chorus to be doing that...as there are so many different networks people may want in their houses....

At my last job we had to use a data cabling company to install additional network cables from the server to staff PC's etc....that was just an internal thing we had done...if you see what I mean..

Regards

Laurie
